Zan,
If I read your post correctly you have out-of-bounds out with no/little hold in. If that is the case you need to play the hold area not relying on built in friction like a THS. Think more along the lines of Nationals.
I would look at a solid cover with Low-Med RG. Examples would be Cell, BW Bite, Gamebreaker, Raw Hammer Anger (Particle), Copperhead, Gladiator, T-Road Solid, etc. I would also have a fair amount of surface (1000-2000 abralon) with little or no oil shine. This will provide the traction needed at the break point and an earlier arcing reaction which will help provide some area downlane eliminating the over/under reactions you are seeing.
You stated you can turn the ball so you may want to back off on the rev rate to help control the turn as well. Once the shot begins to break down, use parallel moves (1 & 1, 2 & 2 etc). Don't be afraid to shell down and make a big move right once you create area downlane. Another option is to chase oil to the outside of the lane if everyone else is moving in using up the head oil.
Good Luck,
