Layout for Nexus f(P+F) for US Open

Once in a lifetime event; Im bowling in the US Open this year.  My style is stroker, PAP 4 7/8" over-7/8" up; +/- 25 degrees axis tilt.  15.5 MPH.  I'm getting a Nexus f(P+F) and would appreciate any comments on a RICO vs Axis/Leverage layout on the Nexus f(P+F) for the Open pattern.

Jack,

 

As someone who has bowled the US Open a few times before, I would not recommend either of those layouts on something like a Nexus. At the Open you would want layouts that would help the ball clear the heads and create a smooth transition at the end of the pattern. On a flatter pattern like this you don't not have the extra volume in the heads and middle of the lane like you do on house patterns in order to help the ball through. 

I would also definitely recommend something on the much weaker side (weakly drilled vibes, tropical heat, maybe even as weak as tropical breeze) for the squad you will bowl on the burn.

I'm looking for a strong, controlled arc on the fresh condition; hoping to stay between 11 and 15 at the arrows and keep everyting in front of me.  Don't give up the 1/3 and keep my spares managable.

 

For medium/heavy oil I have:

Raw Hammer Jacked,1000 abralon, 4" pin/PAP, pin down

Bruswick Rampage, 1000 or 2000 abralon depending on volume/4.25" pin, pin over ring finger

Story Prodigy, RICO (new addition) great on the occasional higher volume THS

 

I do most of my bowling on a medium THS which once in a while has a higher volume.  I was concerned that I would not have much of a back end reaction on the Open fresh pattern.

Thats very interesting; with my stroker style I was most concerned about getting a back end reaction on the fresh condition.     I was hoping that the practice session would give me some insight on how the rest of my equipment would work as the lanes trasition to burn.  It felt a little foolish planning to bring my Black Widow Pearl, Cherry Vibe and Smokin Inferno all with 4000 abralon/PFF but based on your experiences probably not.   

 

Most of my weaker equipment is drilled with some skid/flip but with less axis rotation the reaction might even out.

PS.  Grew up in Dartmouth, MA; my dad still lives there.  He's 94 and still golfs.

Nose is on the right track, I bowled the Open in 2007, and found my aggressive stuff was pretty useless.  Now last year I know they added a couple of feet to the pattern, but from watching on Xtra Frame there still appeared to be plenty of backend if your angles and speed were okay.  The one main suggestion I can give is to go in with a completely open mind and not have a "gameplan".  If you plan on playing a certain part of the lane you can get yourself into trouble if the shot isn't there.  Use your practice session time wisely and really see what your ball does in different "zones".  Play a little bit up 5, try some around 10, 15, 20...etc.  Don't just look at what you can strike with...but what is going through the pins properly and giving you the "minimum" penalty when you miss.

The increase last year to 100 units thru the heads and I think 45 units to 42' had me looking for more agressive equipment and early rolling layouts.  Your advice is right on; I'll keep all my options open and learn as much as possible during the practice session; I'm bringing all my equipnment.  Thanks to you and Nose for sharing your previous Open experience.

I will say that the key on that pattern is surface surface surface.  If you have too much or too little for what you're on, your ball will read the lane at the wrong point and make you misses look even worse than they already are.  You really have to be paying attention to what your ball is doing downlane, as this pattern will move more in the middle in 18 games than any pattern you will ever see.

I'd try a pin down layout around 5" from your PAP then adjust surface if you need.  I rarely need anything stronger than 2000.  Good luck.
