Layouts
« on: April 17, 2009, 03:52:28 PM »
I posted this in the drilling forum but thought I could get more thoughts here.

I'm wondering what layouts tend to work for you guys, and what type of layouts(if any specific ones) typically give a good reaction on sport patterns. What type of reaction is that for you?

My thinking is that very controllable reactions are typical for sport patterns, not exactly a true arc but definitely not skid/snap. That would help avoid over/under right? Then there's the question of the ball having enough energy/entry angle to carry. I'm wondering how one would acheive a reaction like that through layouts.

My stats are in my profile. I prefer to play straighter but most times it seems like that type of line just isn't there for me unless I don't come around the ball as much. That could be just because the PBA patterns I've been bowling on at a particular house is hooking a little more than it should be.

I don't have balls drilled up with sport patterns in mind, but I have found a couple of my Rico drilled balls did well on some sport/PBA patterns.  It seems to give a more mellow or controlled reaction which is what I prefer on sport patterns even to balls that I would probably not have considered.

Other than those, I usually look to bring balls which I know are more controllable for me, so those are usually particles or solids, and depending on the specific pattern length, either pin above or pin below the fingers to help control the breakpoint.

i used to be strictly a straight player but have evolved in to a tweener like brian voss. i can still throw it straight when necessary but can also move in and swing it. i'm by no mean a power player and tend to make adjustments more like an old school player would. i'll usually change balls last....i'll make subtle adjustments with my ball speed, angle of attack, or change in axis rotation first. that being said, i usually use just two(2)layouts on my equipment and rely heavily on surface adjustments on the coverstock on the ball. an arsenal with a variety of surfaces will give you more help and versatility than an  arsenal with multiple drilling patterns......especially when the lanes are tough.

The Rico drilling is probably one of the better drillings for tougher conditions because it might help blend out the pattern a bit, specifically on misses to the outside.

Greg, I tend to agree that only a couple layouts would be necessary for a good arsenal, as long as you use surface adjustments and ball chracteristics to make it all come together.  I have yet to figure out which layouts work best for me, mostly because I've never had two balls with the same drilling and I'm not sure how you tell a ball is good for you because of its layout or if it's just a good match up for you in general.

Only way I can think of is to have two or more of the same ball with different layouts.
