Pin to Pap distances
« on: March 19, 2010, 01:16:37 AM »
What would happen if was drilled with a negative pin to pap or a 7 inch pin to pap? I know the core is most stable at 0 inch pin to pap and 6.25 inch pin to pap. Has anybody tried this or is just illegal to do? What reaction might somebody expect from drillings like these?

would the block just be inverted and the negative pin be 3/4 away from your pap? I know one guy did something like this with a spitfire before.

It will flare "backwards", and I suppose that you get a pretty goofy reaction out of it, but nothing sensible. Flare direction and rotational direction do not go togther anymore. It is as if you'd play a lefty ball as a righty. IMHO not illegal, but pointless?

I thought that a negative pin to pap, for a right hander, would have the pin to the right of your pap.

The only legality issue with any pin location in relation to the grip is static weight.  Other than that requirement you can put them anywhere you desire.  Pin to PAP distance is always expressed as a positive number, regardless of which side of the PAP the pin is located.  When the pin is on the side of the PAP away from grip center the track's bowtie will be located such that the flare will be toward the thumb hole and away from the fingers, and a very large balance hole will probably be required to satisfy the <1 oz side weight limit (if it's even possible to satisy it, would depend on the pin to cg distance and the initial top weight).  I have no idea what type of reaction would result, try it and see.  --  JohnP

My guess is a late, smooth and small hook.  I sometimes use right hand balls and play with my left.

Many people call it a negative pin if your pin is on the left side of the center grip line for a right handed bowler. Under or above the middle finger.

It is all relative to your PAP. The pin under your middle finger for one bowler may be 6" from his PAP, and for another only 4.5" which both would get different reactions out of.
