League bowler with a New Job
« on: December 30, 2008, 03:51:29 AM »
There is bowler in my league that has new job. League starts at 7:00PM on Friday and depending who you bowl or if there are lane problems will end between 9:15PM - 9:45PM. On Friday his start time for new job is 10:00PM.

There could be times when he can't finish the 3rd game. Because things mentioned above. Its kind of hard to find a sub for 1 game. Its a mixed league and he bowls with his wife. He doesn't want to give it up but feels if he can't bowl the 3rd game and can't find a sub then him and his wife might as well drop out. We have lost a couple teams already this year.

Is there anything we can as a league to accommodate his situation?

He could bowl out on nights that his pair is running late.. a teammate of mine had to do this on more than a few occasions last year.

"Bowling out" would be decided after the 2nd game is done or he's part of the way through the 3rd game and needs to "bowl out" the last 3 or 4 frames?

Just trying to clarify.

It doesn't bother me what is done...its the USBC rules. If do anything mentioned above will it be against the rules?

A league officer is stating he can't bowl out the 3rd game based on the rules. We are not trying to cause problem for the officer, just trying to keep a couple league bowlers around.

See if you can get the start time changed to 6:30.

If your league has individual pre bowling in your league rules then he could perhaps prebowl the third game?  I'm not sure if USBC allows partial prebowling. But heck! they allow so many other things I don't see why not.

we always "bowled out" tell the league officer to shove it. If it happens to be the sec and he gets paid on a per bowler basis then he is shooting himself in the foot.

Here is the USBC rule on bowling out. Unless the league rule specifically says that he can't I see no reason why he shouldn't be allowed to.

106d. Bowling Out

Unless the league rules state otherwise:

1.   Adult leagues: A bowler may finish any one game of a series before teammates or opponents.

2.   Youth leagues: A league member may not finish any game of a series before his/her teammates or opponents, unless the league official/supervisor determines an emergency or sufficient cause exists.

Scores recorded while bowling out count in deciding the game and bowler’s average, and qualify for USBC awards and league awards.

NOTE:  A player bowling out should do so while the others continue to bowl. The player should bowl on each lane immediately after the previous bowler completes the frame, so that the progress of the game is not delayed.

Call for a league meeting and ask that your league rules be changed to accomodate pre-bowling

In this day and age of "ify" employment I would think that a league would do whatever it could to support one of its own in their new endevor/job.

The machines at both of the houses I bowl at allow "priority bowling" which allows the said individual to finish the game before everyone else...basically putting them up on each lane at the next possible time

This is the correct interpretation. Unless the league has a special rule prohibiting it, the league officer can jump in a lake. No say-so in the matter. And even if the league does have rules regarding it, I'm not sure 106d doesn't supersede it, anyway.

Also, note the sentence after "NOTE:" above. What it means is basically the guy bowling out will alternate with another bowler for the duration of his "bowling out." He'll go up on lane 1, Bowler B on lane 2. He'll then go up on lane 2, Bowler C on lane 1.

Thanks for the input. I think this is going to cause an issue with the officer.

I think it would be selfish of your league officer to not work with this guy. Sounds like he is pushing him to quit. Every league ive bowled in has allowed people to bowl out if they needed to.
