League bowlers - what are they throwing
« on: March 31, 2011, 08:24:58 PM »
I've been meaning to start this for the past few weeks, but I don't have cell reception inside the center and never remember afterward.  302's thread about older balls reminded me.

What balls are you guys seeing during leagues?  I notice that the majority of  people seem to be using older equipment.  Of course it is a mixed league that is more geared towards fun than competitive.  Still, that doesn't mean we don't have our fair share of 279+ games being thrown.

I don't have a league breakdown of averages or anything, but I know the high male average is around 218 and that guy still gets good use out of his Big Blue.

Since I started bowling leagues in 2004 I could be classified as a ball junkie, so I usually keep an eye out for the newer releases - better to see a reaction in person.  Honestly, I can say that I've seen very few people throwing the latest balls - most are balls that I had never seen before.

Here are just a few that I remember seeing recently:

Monster Bruiser
X-Factor (and others from the Storm X and Factor)
Inferno line (Radical, Intense, Absolute, Scorchin')
Black Widow
Virtual Gravity
Attitude (I think it was #3)
Barbed Wire
3D Offset
Icon2
T Road

I guess the point is that the older equipment still seems to be prevalent in many leagues....and working just fine on a THS.

So what are you guys seeing?  And in what conditions.  I've seen many balls that don't look like they've ever been cleaned or had their grips replaced.

They throw anything and everything, from strong to weak and old to new. In my bag last week, for example, I had a Recon and an Ebonite Thunderbolt. Another guy on the team regularly carries a Seige and a Nitro. Domination and a Turbo for another guy.

The most popular ball in the league right now is the 607A. More guys have one of those than any other single ball.

The most popular brand in the league (and probably the whole state) is Storm. Wherever you go around here, over half the balls on the rack are Storm.

There are lots of older pieces floating around our league...Track T Elite, 3 D offsets from Hammer

An old El Nino...

The other night I was throwing a Storm Paradigm and got my first 300 (WOOHOOO)...but also in my bag was an Apex Adrenaline which is not a new piece at all.

One of my buddies throws an AMF ANGLE once in a while...and as soon as my brother gets them dug out of his closet I will be trying out an old Columbia Udot...the wine colored one

I'll try to make it somewhat brief on what I usually see

Wednesday League: Heavier THS on Synthetics with some serious oil in the middles

1 Spot - Throws his World Beater often but has enough speed to get it downlane, and occassionally a Bedlam

2 Spot - Throws a Lane Breaker

3 Spot - Throws and Anaconda and Virtual Energy

4 Spot -  I throw either my Anaconda or my Pure Physics predominantly

5 Spot -  Original Mission or Lane Breaker

Thursday League: Medium / Light THS on old wood

1 Spot - Ebonite Tornado

2 Spot - Copperhead

3 Spot - Hammer Burn or Complete NV

4 Spot - Hammer Infection or Rogue Cell

5 Spot - I usually am in my Anaconda or MoJave

I bowl in mixed leagues where fun is more important than scores so I see very little new equipment being thrown. There is one World Beater being thrown by a 160 average bowler, 2 Mission 2.0s, and then there's my Hy-Road and Virtual Gravity. Pretty much everything else is older stuff that I don't know names of.

Theres a Total Inferno that's thrown regularly in my league.  I've seen an Icon2, Monster Bruiser, raw hammers, Xfactor (one of them), Black widow, I've thrown my Radical Inferno for a 250 game, then the new stuff that's being thrown is the Nano, quite a few Taboos, Revolvers, 607A...

I dont know if you would call the other stuff I throw old, but been throwing my Ogre SS a lot lately, 900G Lunatic, and original Jigsaw...I have a 916AT that I just havent gotten used to yet...think I need to plug the thumb and redrill.  And I'm going to have a Tsunami that I'm gonna have if they ever drill the thumb at my proshop...hopefully tonight...

All the stuff mentioned above and then some! I bowl in 4 leagues, so I see a lot of stuff. Older Visionary stuff, Dooms, Track Elites, Angular Ones, the whole gamut of MoRich response balls. There is a segment of older senior gentlemen who only throw Columbia or Hammers, period.

Right now Track is very hot, across all leagues. Storm is always out there across the whole league. Then we have the Brunswick staffers, Track staffers, Hammer staffers, and Storm staffers. This past Monday in league on our pair, I saw the Infection, the 250K, the 607SE, and the Wicked Siege, all on the opposing squad. My teammate was throwing MoRich from 2 years ago, and a Columbia Pure Physics. My anchorman throws a Neptune regardless of the conditions he may see!

This morning I saw a Visionary Gargoyle, a Doom, and a Lev/Rev Response by moRich. Amongst the true Big Ballers, i tend to see the Domination and 250K more often than not, but there are also quite a bit of Mutant Cells all over the place, as well.

For some unknown reason, alot of the guys in my league have been using Invasions, Nanos, VGs, Theroys and anything else dull. Then in the third game when the lanes are ruined, they cant figure out why the cant score and why the ball is burning up as soon as it is right of fifteen.

I have been using Solaris BlackOut OOB and Intergral Break Polished.

Lots of Virtual Gravitys and a bunch of 607s (myself included) along with a random assortment of other balls.

My favorite ball being thrown in league is a Hammer Urethane Red Razor. The guy throwing it averages 205 and makes it hook a ton.

I bowl early shift on Thurs. nite. All synthetic..Usually med to lite oil.

My bag is as follows: Tsunami

                                  Freeze

                                  Purple Nitro

                                  Spare Storm

I do see Virtuals and Black Widows being used by others.  I'm thinking on replacing the Nitro with a Ransom or World Beater.
