League by-laws
« on: July 30, 2007, 06:46:35 AM »
Our Saturday night mixed couples league has always been competitive but laid back.  No real run-ins over the rules but it could happen.  So I asked our league secretary if I could have a copy of the league by-laws.  I got a blank stare in return.  This league has been around for a long time and they have no written down league rules.

So after wondering how they have gotten away with this for so long, I decided to help them out.  I'd like to get them started on pulling together league rules but thought it would be easier/faster to work with someone's existing document.  Do any of you have an electronic copy of your league rules that you could send to me?  It would at least give me a starting point.  PM me if you can help and I'll send you my email address.

Thanks!

Send me your e-mail address and I'll send the bylaws I wrote for our PBA Experience league.  I did just what you did, I took by-laws from other leagues and culled together the best parts of both.

Thanks for the offer Shelley.  PM sent.

To the rest of you, I'd love to have some others to compare/contrast.  If you can help, let me know.

I guess I'm not as smart as you guys, I started from scratch. Threw out the old by-laws and started from page 1. BTW, most of the "old" by-laws only quoted rule number in the now USBC Rule Book, not good IMO.

Not sure if your league has the problem, but now ( as of 1 Aug) the leagues will have teeth as far as late payments from bowlers, great idea IMO just several years late.

Be sure , if you quote rule number, check that USBC didn't change the number, several have changed.

There's a sample set of league rules at www.bowl.com.  It's a good place to start.

Look here ... http://www.bowl.com/Downloads/rtf/rules/League/RulesAdultLeague.rtf

FWIW if a league has no written by-laws, then ONLY the USBC league rules apply, if the league is USBC sanctioned. Every league I have ever been in has had some to 6 pages of written by-laws. It is good to have some to avoid many controversies. Many items arise over the years and some very heated "debates" ensue. What is reasonable and logical to some people may sound dumb and irrational to others.

Charlest-

And that's exactly why I offered to help.  There are a few people in our league that would do anything to screw someone out of a point.  Case in point - I believe you need to have a league rule stating it is okay to pre-bowl as an individual.  The USBC rules don't allow this and you need to have a league rule to make it legal.  Bowlers in our league do it all the time but we don't actually have a rule in place to make it legal.  So, in theory, a team could contest a match with another team if someone on that team had pre-bowled.  Not saying it would happen, but it could.
