IT'S BEEN AWHILE... (In House Strike Pots)
« on: July 30, 2007, 05:23:33 AM »
Wow, I haven't been on here for ages, so I guess you could say i kinda took a summer vacation.

Anywho, My local house (independent center) just started an in house strike pot this year for the first time in the center's 30+ years of operation.  The pot is a dollar buy in to all league bowlers (adult obviously) and the strike count is a random 10 strikes throughout a standard three games.  As an avid bowler i'm really excited about the new addition to our center, unfortunetly I'm also an employee there so I'm NOT eligable, but i still think its cool.

So just out of curiousity how do your centers run strike pots if they have them?   How much is the buy in, how many strikes are needed, and what's the highest its gotten to before someone won?

Most of the centers I have bowled at are $1 to enter.  Back when I was an employee at a center, I saw a jackpot get up to $2,500 with the $1 entry.  It was a huge pot.  If I remeber right, I think that the setup for the strike were 3 random strikes each game.  It was a while back though, so, I am not too sure.

Most of our houses have dropped them now.

They were all 25 cents when everyone was running them. I saw one that got to over $7000.

I had a pop at it once got to the last strike (1st ball in tenth frame). I also had the front 9.

This was 1990 and I hadn't thrown an honor score yet.

So I had a chance at 300, 800 and the $7000. Threw it a little hard and left a weak 10 so I guess I choked on it some.

After that most house capped them at $599 so they didn't have to issue a 1099 if you won. They would start another pot with the excess so that when it was broken the next pot would be built up already.

Once we got into the resin era they got broken regularly enough they didn't get too big.

Can recall at least twice in my youth days seeing a $4,000 plus jackpot suddenly going away with no explanation. This was at two different centers but I always wondered how tempting it was for the center to just not take that money when they were a little short.

Maybe they had rules on how long it could last or a cap before it started over, but it sure seemed wrong at the time.

Yeah we had something like that at one of the old houses I bowled at. Back in like 1989 or 90.  It got up to $2000 when I broke it.  My legs were pretty rubbery on that last shot.  I tugged it just a hair but it held.  I had that spent the moment all the pins fell.  Although I had to wait for quite a while.  It took Fair Lanes several weeks to give me my money.

Yeah, I started one of these about 10yrs ago, except it was 12 random strikes. I got lucky enough to knock it offa few times, the most for $2600.

i know im commenting my own post but i know another local center (elk grove bowl for those who went to that gathering) had gotten up to a record high of 12 grand.  Im not sure who hit it, but whoever did was one lucky sob.

I've seen strike pots as high as $3000.  There is a house that has you striking out in the first and third games.  Now thats tough

Some houses also went to different sets of strikes by average.

If your average was under 200 it was 9 strikes in 3 games if over 200 it was 10 strikes.

By making it only a quarter you would get all sorts of skill levels trying to break the pots.

But most of the houses have quit doing strike pots and gone to a system called Keglers cash.  You put up money for each game (up to $5) and they pay ten times what you put up. There are average brackets that change how many strikes (and in some lower averages spares) you need to win in specific frames.

I haven’t done it for quit a while but I believe 220+ has to throw at least 6 strikes in a game to win with most being doubles.

I hit a strike pot in for $7,600 back in 1996.  Had to double in the 10th.  64 lane house that was full (2 leagues).  Everyone in the house quit bowling and was watching.
