League Coin Can Rules??
« on: June 07, 2010, 11:38:01 PM »
Does anybody have a place were I can download or look up rules for those coin cans that some teams have during league.  I know its no set thing, but I need at least something to work with as a starter for the fall league.  Thanks.

Those "cans", "piggy banks", or other containers that teams pitch in to whenever they leave a split, etc? If that's what you are referring to then it's whatever you want as long as everyone agrees... Usually all money is split evenly among team members at the end of the season.

We used to do a couple of different things
1. Open was 10 cents
2. Split conversion - rest of team owes 5 cents
3. Hanging - owes 25 cents
4. Hung a second consecutive frame - double - 50 cents, doubles each time after that. - Doesn't happen often but I had a teammate that was hung 5 frames in a row - owed $7.75 total from the 5 frames
5. Let someone off for being hung - 10 cents, if it were the first two bowlers that didn't strike - each owed 10 cents - based on a 5 man team
6. Open in the 10th - 25 cents
7. Miss your average - 50 cents
8. Don't wear team shirt - $1.00

There are others, it could get expensive every once in a while, but I think on average we each paid anywhere from $1.00 to $3.00 per night.
At the end of the year we used the money to play a round of golf and then bought steaks and beer for the team and the families and had a cookout / pool party.

Here's ours:

--Double, everyone else owes 10 cents
--Beer frame, 25 cents on the hang-ee
--Miss the head pin, 50 cents
--Not getting the wood on a split, 25 cents
--Open frame, 10 cents
--Split conversion, 10 cents from everyone else
--Crossover strike, thrower owes 10 cents
--If your blind score would've beat you, 50 cents
--Most under on the team, 25 cents

Here's how we used to do it.

Double - everyone else puts in a dime.  Then, everyone else puts in a dime for each strike added to the string.
Missed spare - nickel.
Under avg. - quarter.
Get hung - quarter.
Split conversion - everyone else puts in a dime.

Something similar to the above was used by the team I bowled on. At the end of the year, we all went to a nice steak house with our spouses and had a great meal, all paid for by the "can".

Don't think there are any rules about it, just don't think you can force it on anyone.

I guess our's was a little more expensive:

     * miss single pin - 50 cents
     * get hung in a beer frame - 50 cents
     * only one to strike, everyone else owes - 50 cents
     * don't beat the anchor - 50 cents
     * anchor doesn't beat you, he owes - 50 cents
     * don't like your chances for the night - $10 gets you out for the night

The $10 must be made before the halfway point of the first game.  On the last night of league, we doubled everything making them each a dollar.  At the end of the league, I got back $161.00.  Not too bad.

Back when our team used to do a kitty, we had a rather pricey one.  We wound up getting back over $500 a guy at the end of the year.
1.  Missed single pin spare - $1.00
2.  Any other open (not a split) - $0.25
3.  Missed average - $1.00
4.  No count on split $0.25
5.  Triple, everyone else pays $0.25, and $0.25 for each subsequent strike.
6.  If every team member struck in the frame, everyone pays $0.25.
7.  The first hanging of the game was $1.00, each subsequent hanging was
$0.25, and the hangings were of the wrap-around variety.
8.  If we were within 5 marks going into the 10th frame, every fine for an
    open or count is doubled.
9.  If a bowler shot 300 or 800, the other team members paid $3.00 and $10.00
    respectively.
10. Gutter ball $5.00
11. 5 count or less $1.00

I'm sure there were others that I do not recall, but you get the idea.

We made it a bit simpier in our travel league team. Everything was a dime and the captain just did tick marks on paper. Since we bowled 4 sets over the weekend we just paid after the final set. With the varying averages they set a max for the weekend, something like 10 bucks. We did the typcial everyone else paid on doubles or for split pick ups, you pay on missed single pins and seems like we did an under average. Ours was used for the Travel league national tournament entry fee at the end and if anything was left we split it up.

Years ago we used to do one that included, for strikes, a nickel put in by the other bowlers for one strike, a dime for a double, twenty cents for a turkey, forty cents for a four bagger, eighty cents for a five bagger, etc.  It got prety expensive when several bowlers got on a string.  --  JohnP
