im in a weight issue quandry 14,15,16 ( kinda long )

let me preface this by saying im undergoing numerous changes in my game.
thumb pitch, span, lateral
went from a 4 step to a 5 step
went from using a wrist support, to not using one now
RELEASE changes
putting stuff on the back of my thumb hole
push off and back swing
just to name a few

my dilemma is this

@ 15 i can get plenty of revs 350 +/- no problem w/ new release, but my problem is when i get excited i amp my speed way up, and either pull it inside or spray it too far outside and it doesn't come back( 18-19 mph )

when im relaxed and not overthrowing it its a beautiful thing ( 16mph ish ), but i have a real hard time keeping everything slow.

i wonder if i go to a 16 if i will be less tempted to man handle the ball when excited and if i will lose revs.

the other thing is my elbow ( its painful probably tendinitis )

@ 14 lbs will it be too light and throw it too fast, but i will gain revs and control.

i have a 14 in my bag now and i have tremendous control over it, but i just don't think it has the gusto to carry.

im baffled , and don't know which way to go

Bowlerdawg get the tendinitis taken care of and then throw 14 lbs to keep it under control. I have been throwing 14 for 3 years and my scores have been going up ever since. I will tell you that I do have a speed problem and I do have to remind my self about it every now and then. You will get to a point where you only have to worry about speed that won't be a bad thing.

mrbowlingnut: I don't have first hand experience with Graston. I ended up going with ART because I liked the background of the provider and he's convenient. I have a good friend who just started Graston therapy for elbow tendonitis, and what he described is similar to what you can find on the website.

It's a form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that breaks down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The Technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.

What's not generally understood about tendonitis/tendonosis is that the source of the problem isn't the tendon but the surrounding muscle. The muscle gets tight from overuse/fatigue and then starts pulling the tendon away from the attached bone. Scar tissue forms as the body attempts to heal muscle/tendon, which causes the cronic longer term issues most tendonitis sufferers face.

So the practitioner breaks down and 'remodels' scar tissue with specially designed instruments. At the same time they get you into exercises that stretch out the muscles and teach you habits that will prevent reoccurrence.

Nothing is 100% effective for everyone, but these therapies have a fairly high success rate. Good luck.

Steven thanks for the heads up again, I think if my insurance is accepted it is worth a visit to talk with them. I can actually feel the scar tissue around my elbow joint, guess from my Don Carter bent elbow the stress is catching up with me after all the years of bowling.

Amen. I think some ball muscling habits caught up with me too. I shake my head when I watch the way a lot of younger bowlers strap the ball and the stress it's putting on their arms. They're accidents waiting to happen.

Good luck if you do the Graston. ART has been great, but I'm going to try ASTYM to see if it helps with the last 20% of healing. If you proceed, let me know how it goes.
