League folded last night
« on: September 13, 2013, 01:49:06 PM »
16 teams last year...at 5 men per team.  Got to the lanes last night...only 5 teams show up.  League decided to fold.

How in the world does a league evaporate that quickly.  We had our ups and downs over the years with the economy, etc.  But to just have the majority lose interest over the summer seems strange.

Sign of the times I suppose.

Was this league at an AMF house?

House that AMF used to have...they did not renew the lease.  Private owners bought it.

I wonder if that was known to all of the bowlers.. if not, the house may have just been an innocent bystander of the Bowlmor fiasco. If that's the case, that sucks. :(

It is disheartening to see that  :(  Our Friday night league started tonight, 4 3 person teams..  They are still bowling, thankfully..

I actually resurrected my local league... Had fallen down to 5 teams and word was it was going to fold.  Did some recruiting the past month and now have enough new blood for an additional team.  Good for a year...  We will see what happens next...

Leagues fold mainly because of poor communication and organization between league bowlers, team captains, league officers and ownership.  To keep a league going all of that communication has to be solid.  One should not expect to go to a league meeting or 1st night of bowling and assume everything is the same a last year.  Heads buried in the sand.

Most league bowlers assume that they just show up and it's up to the house to keep the league full.  Not going to happen in this day in age.  Even though it's in the proprietors wallet from what I have seen many proprietors think it's still the 50's open the doors and they will come.  Majority of centers think put an ad in the paper, post leagues on facebook or a website and my center will be full....nada takes face to face and shaking hands etc to keep your center full.  How many on BR can say that they have been contacted by proprietor or management face to face to keep them as league bowler?  I'd guess less than 10%.  League bowlers have been taken for granted forever.

I guess I'm just getting old.  League was run solidly for years.  We had a waiting list to get in at one time.  You would usually have 1 or 2 teams drop out and just replace them from the waiting list.

Now teams don't even tell you they are dropping out...they just never come back.  Complete lack of courtesy all around.  Where they wander off to...I guess I'll never really know.

Oh well...guess I'll just sub on another night...not ready to commit to a full time league after that debacle.
