Hi all,

Its at the end of our season, when we were asked how we felt about going from a trios league to a duos... Personally, I like bowling with my friends, and do not wish to change to duos, because others bowlers drop out, and the centre has average business/customer service skills in retaining bowlers we again have to compromise....

I suggested two short seasons eg 18 weeks as an idea?!?
Shorter seasons make it easier to commit to, and average tends to move a bit more. Also push the coaching, people leave for many reasons, we shouldn't let them leave because they are frustrated and have no idea of how to improve. Hence push the coaching. Just ideas, love to read yours/

Can anyone suggest a couple of options here... We need an alternate plan by next week, as there are three trios teams, and I'm guessing we are all in the same predicament. If theres nothing on the table, then duos it is..

Take it easy

Since you entered no profile its pretty tough to know what type of league you are interested in.

I do know that you can sanction 9 pin no tap leagues and that they can even be eligible for awards if there's a normal score keeping system in place.

Having trios drop to duos doesn't sound too interesting to me either.  I'd look at the lineage fees and see if the house isn't expecting too much or the secretary being paid too much hense cutting into the prize fund.  Also look at the distribution of that prize fund and the handicap system.  A handicap system that caters to certain teams can quickly kill a league.

Not knowing where you are, there could be other options for sweepers, like a local casino/bowl or something like that.

Its a mixed league in Aus... Handicap is 80% of 200.... social and friendly league. We just do not want to split friends up.. Its an important part of bowling for me..

There are no cash or pot sweetners, its rock up bowl your 3 games, have a laugh and go home... Its all good...

I do not wish for our trios to go doubles, nor do most of the teams... Any advice Atochabsh appreciated or anyone else out there..

what can we do????
Please help

You mentioned pushing coaching, so what about finding a coach or 2 that will provide coaching a half hour or so before league.  Arrange with the house for free or very low coast lineage and a nominal fee for the coach.  Make it optional.

My home center has a "beginners" league.  Basically it is non-sanctioned and for fun.  Each week the bowlers show up, they get 3 free games.  This allows them to get in some practice and keeps them coming each week.

A friend bowled in aleague that was struggling with retaining bowlers and they went to something like a 16 - 18 week season.  That broke the year into 3 seasons.  They didn't lose bowlers at the end of the season and actually grew.

I wouldn't expect the house will make many concessions for your league if it is three trios(9 people), so try to move your 9 people to another night/league.

I'll keep trying to push the 18 week season, see how that goes. Thank you for your suggestions...

We certainly do not want to change nights , and there is a league on before us, so coaching might be hard on those lanes prior to our league. Yet, I feel that coaching is definately a good thing to encourage bowlers to improve, and kep turning up every week.

Take care
