League of One Bowler per Team
« on: March 17, 2010, 02:36:13 AM »
Has anyone been in a league where the team is you?

Here is the USBC rules:

quote:
100a. Qualifications

USBC will certify leagues participating in the game of American tenpins with the following provisions:

1. All leagues must meet the following requirements:

a. Apply for certification through the local association in whose jurisdiction it bowls.

b. Consist of four or more teams with the playing strength of one or more players per team as determined by league rule.

c. Bowl in accordance with a prearranged schedule based on the number of teams in the league.

d. Adopt rules and prize list (if any). (See Rule 103b and 122.) (Suggested adult league rules can be found on bowl.com.)

e. All players seeking membership must be qualified under the bylaws of USBC. (See USBC Introduction, Chapter 1.)

f. Provide for the designation of a team champion by the games bowled in scheduled competition.

g. Govern themselves by USBC rules. Other rules may be added, but must not conflict with USBC rules.

It seems like you can do it. I am thinking of starting a League like this.

There's a league like this at one of the centers where I bowl.  They bowl four games, two each against two different opponents, and standings are based on cumulative handicap pinfall plus bonus pins for wins.  It's been extremely popular.

I have several friends that bowl in this type of league at Strike and Spares, Hendersonville, TN and they bowl on Wednesday nights!

There some things I am not sure about when setting this up. Here are couple of my questions:

Substitutes: It would seem that there should be no substitutes in a league like this.

The season is going to be short (10-12 weeks). If there are more bowlers than weeks. Some bowlers would not bowl against each other. I never been in a leauge with that situation.

Is there a certain way you set things up in this scenario?

What if there are 8 or more individuals at the end tied for first place? What do you do in the position round (who plays who)?

After position round and there are still ties, do they all compete in a one playoff game against each other?

trash, still working on getting those rules for you...

With cumulative pinfall determining standings, the possibility of ties is dramatically reduced.  IIRC, the league awards 20 bonus pins for each win and 10 for total pins for each two-game block.

Going with the two two-game blocks would essentially double the number of matches for the league, so if you draw 24 bowlers or less, they'll all bowl each other in a 12-week short season.

Years ago when i lived in Rockford we had a league like this. We bowled a full season and 2 matches of 2 games per night. For standings we used the Peterson point system It was 1 point for every 100 pins plus 1 point for the win. So if you shot say 243 and won you would get 3.43 points for that game if you lost you would have gotten 2.43 when the total on the decimal reached 100 you would get a point and the decimal would reset . for example 243w 268l your total points for that match would be 6.11 points  3.43 for game 1 and 2.68 for game 2

Our Tues Scratch League is a singles league. Four games per night against one opponent, moving pairs each game. 10 points per night, 2 per game and 2 for series. 36 week season, this year it's divided into halves, last season it was thirds. The oil pattern changes every six weeks. Open substitution except for position rounds. Off the top of my head, I want to say ties are decided by pinfall.
