League Oil Pattern Suggestion
« on: October 12, 2008, 01:33:02 PM »
Hello all,

I help run a mixed bowling league and need help choosing a oil pattern that is not too easy and one that is not too hard. We bowl in a Brunswick house with synthetic lanes.
The bowlers didn't want the typical "house shot" because they didn't want all of the high high scores from last season. So we tried a version of a sport shot and a version of the "Viper" and those were too hard for everyone and they complained once again.
Would a "christmas tree pattern" maybe 38 feet be a easier shot as well? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

Go with the cheetah or one of the SEVERAL new KEGEL patterns.
--------------------
300 x 7  800 x 2 815 & 825

Proud new owner of lane #1
Buzzsaw C/2
Cobalt Bomb
Black Cherry Bomb

And the almighty

The BUZZBOMB is Da-Bomb.

Look into the Kegel Challenge patterns, all of which you can download online.

They're a bit harder than your THSs, and easier than your true sport shots.

They're the "middle of the road" patterns, I believe.
--------------------
Righty
High rev rate (400-450 rpm)
Semi-high speed (16-17 mph)
Book average: 193 (current 236)

For a game based on the principles of science and math, bowling sure does have a bad habit of being illogical.

The kegal route sounds like a good idea.  I bowled in an experience league this summer and I know the patterns play differently in different houses due to varying factors but for some reason I always played well on chameleon.   Alot of other higher scores were shot on that and shark, and the drier shorter patterns played tougher with lower scores (cheetah, viper and a few of the major patterns that are short).

If your house is like ours and plays tougher with shorter patterns, I'd look into an experience league if you have one and see what your bowlers there think is the easiest shot and try that and see if your mixed league likes it.

Thanks.

I looked at the Challenge patterns. The "Broadway" a 37ft pattern and the "Middle of the Road" a 39ft pattern sounded like they would work out.

Do you think these two patterns are a small step up from a house shot in difficulty? I still want everyone to have fun. Right now they are not.

Tidbit: Right now the high average on a modified Viper is 191 after 5 weeks. But most bowlers are 30 to 40 pins under their last years average.

You can use a THS, but make sure that there are no dry boards close to the gutter (1 at best, like Cheetah) and that the oil ratio is even. I came across an overall 5.5:1 ratio THS (which was used in a tournament - with the same "problem" you mentioned to find a balance between challenge but keeing it playable) some months ago, in the 38' range, and it was quite a challenge. You could not play against any wall at all, and the lane changed quickly. Players who started out with aggressive balls fared well for 2 games, but then had big trouble with over/under reactions.

I agree with Dizzy here.  Tighten up the outside on the THS, and you should be alright.  Or the Kegel series are fun.

the Kegel series are an awesome array of oil patterns, or you could just simply flatten your oil pattern out, so they don't have that bumper to the pocket at 10 board like most house shots have, we just did that on our mens league and its still a challenge, but very playable

I agree with some of the guys here, put more oil out on the last 8 boards of the lane, not a lot but enough to tighten up the shot and run the overall pattern 2 feet longer and it will be harder.

That will make most house players VERY frustrated and possibly quite mad. I'd bet it will be worse for them than the flat sport patterns. One of my old houses was forced to put oil on the first 5 boards several years ago to get ABC sanctioning. Normally they did not oil them AT ALL. That night, in their "premium" scratch league a good 70% of all the bowlers threatened to quit if they did not restore the old oil pattern. They had no idea it was illegal and they could care less. They wanted their Danger Zones to hook at their feet no matter whether they put 2 or 3 revs on the ball. No joke, here.

Try PBA senior tour pattern 1, i think its 1 atleast. A good patter where you get rewarded when you make good shots, and punished if you make a bad shot.

Funny, I've also had some bowlers threatening to quit if they didn't get a more playable shot.

I have seen senior bowlers crying because they were faced with a fresh THS in a tournament! Nothing fancy, 38' everyday standard pattern - it was just fresh and clean. But almost everyone (and there were good bowlers among them I know from the loacl clubs and leagues) was complaining that the lane was unplayable... they were about to hang the lane man , who just told them what was out there (and what was clearly to see through the balls' reactions from outside). But many were simply too stubborn to adjust, move a bit towards the gutter and play down-and-in. Ego thing, I guess?

What type of lane machine do you have??Also do you know the microliter setting if it has sanction technology?
