Best Mens bowling colleges! PLZ help!
« on: October 12, 2008, 10:29:02 AM »
Does anyone know where I can get a list of the best mens bowling colleges in the nation. I mean, obviously Wichita is near the top...

Anyway, I'm going to college next year, and I really want to bowl at the collegiate level. Whether we're the best in the nation is not important, but I want to bowl for a team that bowls in a lot of tournaments, so I can get the best experience.

Even if you don't have a full list, post who you think has some good college teams for the men!
--------------------
Righty
High rev rate (400-450 rpm)
Semi-high speed (16-17 mph)
Book average: 193 (current 236)

For a game based on the principles of science and math, bowling sure does have a bad habit of being illogical.

You need to concentrate on going to a good college that will give you a good education in your field of study.

There is virtually no financial future in bowling.

If this school has a bowling program then you can do can join it.

Scholarships are few and are limited in value. Out of state tuition will more than eat up most scholarships given by bowling programs.

Best post in ths thread...bar none!  It's about the education first....bowling along with everything else is secondary or third or farther down the list of priorities.

I can attest to putting education first.  While bowling and coaching at Texas A&M, we had a very talented team but couldn't afford to travel to a lot of the more prestigious tournaments.  We did have some good teams in our district with West Texas and Texas Tech along with us.  (we only got $1200/yr at the most)  I can understand the want to bowl collegiately, but most colleges only have club teams unless you are a female where the school has a the chance to put out an NCAA team.

Another thing that has already been posted is the difference between out-of-state and in-state tuitions.  What state do you live in?  Like others have said, proximity to tournaments is another thing.  We always had to rent vans and get hotel rooms.  Combine that with a university rule that you can't drive between midnight and 6 am meant a lot of missed classes on friday.  (this rule may only apply to my school)

Ability to play is another thing.  Do you want to play immediately or do you want to ride the bench or be on the "B" team?  Going to a big program may make you a better bowler in the end, but your tournament experiences may not be as many as you like.

All-in-all you are the one that determines your bowling experiences in college.  If the college you want to go to doesn't have a bowling team, you can always start one and gain valuable leadership experience.  Future employers will love that.

The last few posts seemed to sum it up best.  Go to a school with an educational program that you are interested in.  If they have a bowling program as well, thats a bonus, not a requirement.  Unless you are pulling down a free ride or a hearty scholarship, traveling to a school that does not offer reciprocity will be awfully expensive to do just for bowling.

I bowled for 4 years in college for a small school.  We had enough funding for what we wanted to do and I enjoyed it very much.  That being said, I also enjoy that my student loans are about half as much as it would have been if I had attempted to bowl for one of the bigger schools where I would have been stuck with out-of-state tuition.

This is another reason I don't mind attending the University of Delaware. The main reason I went there was because of their great academic program. The bowling was just an added bonus. On top of this, their bowling club is not one of the better teams in the country, so with good experience in tournaments and in JoG, I made their A and most likely will be starting.

A couple of questions.

How are you're grades?
What part of the country you located in?
What do you're SAT's look like?
Can you get a student loan?
