League practice cheater
« on: March 04, 2005, 02:36:44 AM »
We start practice the same as most houses. They turn the lanes on and we get 10 minutes of practice. With 5 person teams you are lucky if you get in 6 shots.

They put up on the monitors that practice has ended and a few seconds later they announce that practice has ended as well. Many who are getting up on the approach at this time go ahead and throw one last shot anyway. I don’t have a problem with this.

But we have one guy who waits for everyone to leave the approach and then goes ahead and throws another shot or two. Almost invariably he ends up getting a ball or two scored and they have to erase the score from the lead off bowler. It is just a sneaky way to get in another practice shot or two.

Now since he is bowling out of turn they simply consider it a dead ball and doesn’t count and there is no league rule on it but it really hacks me off.

This last week he did it to us and I made comments about it loud enough that everyone for 4 lanes around could hear. My statement was that he shouldn’t get away with doing this every week and that he should follow the procedure and quit practicing. But from the reaction I have feeling it will happen again to someone next week.

What would/should be done?

I hate to have to institute a rule penalizing someone for a rare offense. I tempted next time to simply get in his face on the approach and stop him from doing it and try for a little public humiliation.

Yeah, and get kicked the proprietor pissed off if he hits the rack and maybe get the league in trouble... sounds like a plan.

Press the reset button and say "Oh I thought practice was over so I was resetting the spare that was up there". Me personally though, drop a ball from about waist high on the approach as hes going up.

Or get an airhorn and blow it while he's on the approach/ get a whistle and blow it (I'm a lifeguard and have a nice loud as@ annoying one that would work perfect!)

I looked in the Rule Book online at bowl.com and all I could find was that a bowler who bowls out of turn is granted a dead ball and can rebowl that frame.
In your situation, given that he is purposely bowling out of turn after the arrows have been turned on for league play,it could be interpreted in several ways......
Since the team captain is responsible for the conduct of the players, ask him to talk to this person and tell him that he's unnecessarily holding up play so that everyone can get done at a reasonable time and get home/enjoy a few drinks, etc. Or have the captain simply tell him to get his butt there a little earlier so that he can get the practice he wants.
If that doesn't work then go to the league officers with the same complaint. Ask them to tell him that he can be suspended for conduct detrimental to the game---it's in the book---look it up.
If they won't get on him,try the local asociation officers.

PB, just block whatever lane he is attempting to get up on long enough for the arrows to come up.  You're certainly big enough to keep him from getting there.  You can make it look like an accident.

Either that or just simply tell him to stop.

These are usually the guys that show up late and still want the same # of practice balls that the early birds get.  Too bad.

He is not late. In fact he is generally first in line when the lights come on.

I'd thought about the blocking tactic also. But I generally forget about it by the time we bowl against them again.

I probably should just bring it up with his team captain if anything.

Oh well without controversy life would be BLAND. (ksucat hint hint)

Yeah, I got the hint.  I don't know where he got the notion of taking 2 shots after they announce to stop.  He's not the only one, it seems to happen everywhere.  I continue to go if I'm already on the approach.  If he strikes on your lane next time, just take it and move on.  See what he says.  If he says anything, then you can bring up the fact that he shouldn't be throwing shots when the arrows are already up.

We had a guy in our league that did this.  I was always having to fix the scoring because he'll throw a couple of late shots, and his team does not have anyone that can adjust the score.  After one week, I refused to fix it, so they had to get help from the desk (no one else in the league would assist them either.. I wonder why?).  The team captain talked to this idiot a few times, but he wouldn't listen.  Now, towards the end of practice, the captain just pulls the offenders ball off the rack, and says the ball return is acting up again.  This nimwhit falls for that everytime.  He can't figure out why his ball is the only one having problems returning.

If he bowls out of turn just give him the score he bowls and tell him next time bowl in turn.  If he bowls on the wrong lane after something is said give him a zero.

Not sure of the ruling but it could be interpreted as if someone went to the bathroom and you skip a bowler to avoid wasting time.

If it was match play he would foreit the game.

Superglue + timing it to put it in his thumbhole just before practice ends, just before he gets his ball = Fun.
