How many of you have a rule (written or unwritten) that says you ARE NOT allowed to show up early and get a couple practice games in on the lanes you are bowling on? Even after they have been oiled down?
I'm against it, but it happens a lot in one of my leagues. Once the lanes are oiled down, they should not be bowled on until start of the league.

Never seen it. There's no bowling after the lanes have been oiled until league starts

Likewise here. Your league should ask the house to forbid it out of fairness to the rest of the bowlers. Warming up anywhere else but the league lanes is fine.

We have one house here that allows its league members to practice before league starts, the other two houses wont let people bowl on the lanes after they are dressed.

I bowled a league a few years back where the league President would show up early, and bowl on someone else's pair(from the same league) and her pair would be locked. If she bowled well, she would actually bowl during league that night. But if she was having an off day, the bitch would put herself in a blind. She had the highest average for the females of course.

I'm amazed that this thing is as widespread as it seems. It strikes at the very heart of fairness.
Every team should at least be able to start on a level playing field, rather than one manipulated by some idiot looking for an advantage. And we wonder why people leave the sport??

I will let Edward James Olmos explain how you get ahead. Hard to be my age and not be cynical.

Most centers aren't going to allow a league rule that costs them revenue.

They have other problems if they're worried about that little revenue amount gained from it.

It doesn't have to cost them revenue if they let them bowl on a different lane.

Before I retired from bowling I bowled in a Thursday night league. The house would allow bowlers to practice on pairs that were already oiled but not bowl on the pair you are scheduled to bowl on that session. So basically, they could either 'burn in' a shot or 'shimwreck' the shot. One of the person's who would bowl is actually the league secretary/treasure who is also a board member or was a board member in the local association. The only thing that was really fair in that league was the prize fund. I was not a team captain and I don't remember if this has been brought up in the past or not but based on what I see in the posts, I do believe the center is not going to turn away any revenue even for how small it is.

On the opposite side, I have seen league rules where, after the lanes have been oiled, you were only allowed to bowl on your pair. That way you would only screw up the pair you were to bowl on. Not sure how happy that would make the other team or your own team.
Most houses around where I live and bowl will not permit bowling on league lanes by league members after the lanes have been oiled.

By me, many houses oil for the early shift just before league, so it costs them nothing.
Some houses oil around 1 or 2 PM and allow open bowling until before the first league , around 6:30 PM.

No offense but those houses kinda suck. My league is a Sunday afternoon fun league and even then they specifically oil before league and don't allow anybody on those lanes (of course we start about a half hour after the place opens). I have also been kicked off open lanes I was bowling on and moved elsewhere because they had to get lanes ready for league at other places on other days. Guess maybe just lucky to have decent lanes in my area.

IN the house i bowl in they allow league members to bowl on the lanes beforehand but not your own. Pisses me off as last year i had three guys who always bowled next to me because of the schedule always practicing on my lanes because they didn’t want to carry their equipment far. So my lanes were chewed up every week and they got to bowl on the fresh. Eventually i said something

It's different for us. Even if the lanes are dressed, the league rule that we have is that anyone can practice bowl before league, as long as it is not on the set of lanes your league uses.
For example, at a 50-lane house here in town, our league at the time took lanes 3 - 22. After the lanes are dressed, and a person from our league wanted to practice, they would have to be given (obviously, based on availability) lanes 23 and higher. They would not be allowed to practice on the lanes our league uses.
