league question
« on: April 22, 2005, 01:44:40 AM »
Hey guys......I am a secretary for a handicap league in west michigan.  I have devised a plan for us to guarantee 2000 dollars to our league champion next year.  This year first place  will be half that, every other year it has been considerably less, even.  My question is do you think that if this league was in your part of the world, you would try and put a team in because of the prize money, and also if you know what is first place in the leagues you bowl in now, plus how much do you pay each week.  I am trying to justify my budget, and raising our weekly  nut to 13 per bowler.
so if you would tell me ....your prize money, your weekly cost and would a high prize fund get you to join?  thanks

we pay 7.85 per line  anybody know what yoy pay.....

Let's see, $2000 first place, 5 man team, comes out to $400 a man.

League fees $13 x 36 = $468.

Don't see any profit, although its still a better return on your money than most leagues.

sirkegler......I am not thinking of this as a way for a bowler to turn a profit, by the  way its 34 weeks not 36, but  merely as an incentive to choose our league over a myriad of others.  We have had challenges filling our league the past 2 years and now I have 10 teams 4 of which won't come back next year if we don't move to a different house, and 4 that won't come back if we stay in the house we are in.  I believe that given the opportunity to win a higher dollar than most of the competing leagues, we have a chance to grow the league and attract some bettor quality bowlers at the same time.  I am curious if the prize fund would  influence any one of the regulars on this board or are we creatures of habit and would most of us just continue in the same leagues on the same nites in the same houses as all the other years.

Unless you can find a sponsor for the league so that the prize fund is boosted by the sponsors contribution it probably will not matter in getting teams to bowl.

Most leagues have teams that have little to no chance to win. If you try to raise their fees very much they will simply quit or go somewhere else rather than donate.

But without the lower echelon teams you can’t get enough money into the fund to get the big prize. This is the reason most leagues give prize money down the entire standing sheet rather than stack it all on top.

that shouldn't be an issue,  this is a 90% handicap league, we have quarters, everybody has a chance, infact 2 of the 4 quarters were won this year by teams that jsut aren't very good.  All teams in the league get prize money, not just the top few.  we try and share the wealth, but we want to attract some bettor bowler via a good top prize.  We migth have a sponser, as well, we are working on it.

Highest paying league I am in currently offers $1500 per person to the 1st place team plus $300 per round won.  We pay $22 per night for 32 ? weeks.  Last 4 places get  $325/person back.  The $300/ round I am not sure if it is per person or team...my team was never even close to winning a round unless they printed the standings upside down.

They did get $6000 added from sponsorship.

I bowl just south of Erie, PA and it's 8.00/week for 32 weeks with the lanes taking in 6.15 of that and the top team gets like 60 bucks each.  It's an old man league though.
