League rules question!
« on: December 10, 2013, 03:23:51 PM »
It now takes 12 games before your average goes into the books? I thought it was 27 before.

Also if a league says they look back the last 2 years, It would include the 2011-2012 league average correct?

first question it take 21 games according to USBC for a establish average for tournament purposes (But some leagues could use ave with less games). But also every game you bowl in a certify league needs to be turn into your local assoc. no matter what amount of games (1-120+ games) bowled in that league. An yes if they are going back 2 years (that would include 2011-12 & 2012-13 seasons).

So if you were bowling against someone in a league, and the only "book" average you could prove would be a 233 average for 12 games in 2011-2012, would you expect them to use that average or the 195 average given to people without a book average?

It should be in the league rule.

Every league I have bowled in that used book averages required at least 21 games. If the number of games was less than that they either set an average that night or would use a fixed average given by the league.

I have a feeling the league rules say "An average in the last two years" without a number listed.  If that was the case, would you use the 12 game average posted in the book, or would 21 games be the default number?

All averages SHOULD be listed, but that is not the same as saying that figure becomes the "book" average.  If you bowled one night as a sub, those three games SHOULD be recorded in some manner.

The number of games accepted for the purposes of 'book' average will be organizational dependent and SHOULD be codified in the rules.

I guess the question im still looking to be answered is this, if the league rules DO NOT say a certain number of games, do we use the 12 game posted average, or the default average for the league?

The nearly universal definition is that at least 21 games is needed for an official average.

20 years ago I don't believe the local books included averages of less than 21 games but with the use of computers, the book has expanded to include any number of games.

Your league rule should stipulate how many games. You stated you had a "feeling" it does not which implies you don't really know.

If no number of games is mentioned in the league rules then I would think you need to get a meeting of team captains to define what a book average is.

I don't believe anyone on this board can make that definition for your league.

My "feeling" was just in case it wasn't listed.  If it is listed then it is cut & dry.

You might also think about adding the composite average in the future to league rules. That is all of the games bowled and all pins to form one average. IF this is higher USBC encourages tournaments or leagues to use that composite. What I see is this only comes into play when bowlers tend to sub in a lot of leagues and have several of those under 21 game averages that pushes the average up.  To the personal opinion as a long time secretary, our league stated 21 game from our league, book or set. Seems if the league rule does not state number of games then a 3 game average could be used.

Most tournaments continue to accept only averages of 21 games or more for handicap purposes.

However, a local association is now required to submit all averages, regardless of number of games. Reason: If you now look at a USBC member's average on bowl.com, you will see that if he/she has bowled in more than one league, a composite average is now listed (and it factors in all league averages, regardless of the number of games bowled).
