Earlier this year I had to quit my league because of the need for surgery.  I asked someone to substitute for me for the second half of the season.  I told him that I would pay for all the league fees.  He bowled for free for 17 weeks.  Last week we got our league payout and I thanked him for bowling for me and gave him $30.00.  He was upset because I gave him only $30.00.  He felt he should be entitled to at least half of the prize money I received.  His reasoning was that it cost him gas money to get to the bowling center and took up his time. If I had known he felt this way I would have found a different sub. My team and I do not feel that we owe him anything else. I would appreciate others thoughts about this.

He got the opportunity to bowl free games, enter jackpots, etc without having to worry about league dues. If dues are $10-15 per week, over 17 weeks he basically received roughly $200+ from you. Any amount that you would have given him from your share of the team payout would have been a generous amount.

This year, I subbed in two different leagues.  In league one (1) I bowled 30+ games.  League was very competitive and a joy to bowl.  I could have gotten into brackets and side pots, but have cut back on that in the last year.  Don't expect to get anything back and don't mind.

In league two (2), I bowled 60+ games and almost qualify for year end awards (might actually since I am an extra member of the team).  Even if I do, I will have the secretary remove my name from any awards list since I didn't pay any league fees.  Once again, don't expect anything and don't mind.

As a sub, I realize I do not pay any money and thus am not legally entitled to any monies.  If your sub only bowled one night, I am sure he wouldn't expect any part of the prize fund, so it makes sense it would be the same if he bowled more than one night.  If he is still insistent on getting a share of the prize fund, perhaps mention the fact you paid for lineage you didn't bowl.  Perhaps he would be willing to pay for the lineage that he bowled.

If any sub expects any prize fund money, it MUST be agreed upon before bowling the first night.  That is the only way it is fair to the person paying the fees.  If nothing was agreed upon, then there is nothing to be paid.

He should be happy to bowl for free and to get anything.

If he had paid the complete dues for the 17 weeks (if that was the arrangement you two had agreed upon), then he could claim that percentage of the prize fund. Otherwise, he's entitled to the air he breathes.

I agree with most of the other posters as well, but this is closest to what I was thinking.  Free bowling unless otherwise agreed upon earlier.

This scenario almost came up in our league one year. We a had sub who regularly bowled through out the season. You needed 66 games in to be eligible for idividual prizes that year.  The team he was playing for, had a bowler quit with 3 weeks left in the league. This guy paid only paid three weeks into the league, but bowled 50 some games.

He had high series, high game, and high average for the league. He thought he would walk out with the extra money. But we showed him the rules. He didn't seem too happy about it.

Now. Let's say he did bowl enough games and still only paid for 3 weeks of bowling. Should he qualify for those awards?  Me personally, I would remove my name from the list.

Our league rules specify that in order to qualify for individual awards a bowler must bowl 2/3 of the total league games as a team member.  --  JohnP

My first question is why give him ANY money? While unless your in the "click" of bowlers it's not hard to find someone with the time and schedule that is satisfactory, many bowlers will sub on a league for free even with no problem. The audacity that you would give someone any money at all to bowl for free is perplexing to me. Now with that said and I"ve been in this situation is if this person is paying league fees should get a percentage due at the end. I did this once for a relative for many weeks and screwed me by basically ripping me off and not getting any of the prize fund. So that will never happen again. If someone is an extra member and bowling for free while the person out is paying for the league dues there is only a few things that person should know:
No bitching about subbing otherwise don't do it
No bitching about getting prize funds
Shut up and bowl and be grateful your bowling for free. Afterall, your not a member of this league and should be considerate.

So on the flip-side of things: I was recruited to bowl the last seven weeks of the season on two leagues...paying my own nightly fees...so more of a replacement than a sub. The one league team is giving me a cut of the proceeds, the other one did not.

I'm not one to raise a stink, and am glad I got to bowl (as I hadn't since 2005, so a little extra practice was great for me), but the league that cut me out was paid out by the number of team wins. They went from LAST PLACE to 8th in the seven weeks I bowled with them (16-team league). I guess I did get a few beers out of them on the last night...

My thoughts on this are if you pay, you should share in the team's earnings, based on a percentage of the games/weeks that you bowled.  If you are paying for the lineage, prize fund, secretary fees, etc, then you are basically a member of the team, not a sub.  Subs usually bowl free.
