Earlier this year I had to quit my league because of the need for surgery. I asked someone to substitute for me for the second half of the season. I told him that I would pay for all the league fees. He bowled for free for 17 weeks. Last week we got our league payout and I thanked him for bowling for me and gave him $30.00. He was upset because I gave him only $30.00. He felt he should be entitled to at least half of the prize money I received. His reasoning was that it cost him gas money to get to the bowling center and took up his time. If I had known he felt this way I would have found a different sub. My team and I do not feel that we owe him anything else. I would appreciate others thoughts about this.

I got point money for the points won while I bowled, my replacement got the point money for the points won while he bowled.
My replacement got the share of the league championship prize money.
I don't remember if there were any team awards (high games, series, etc.), but if there were whoever was bowling at the time would have gotten the share of the award.

JohnP let me ask this. Who paid the league fees while you were off? If the sub did then he is definitely entitled to the prize money. If you paid, then you should receive the prize money.

Fluff, my thoughts are in line with yours. That's how I understand protocol for a "sub", unless he requested special treatment up front as a ringer / hired gun. You throwing him $30 was a decent move. Did your team pay for him to go to the banquet, if you had one? I would have done that as well. But to demand your share is a low class move on his part, IMO.

There is a great incentive of being an extra member of a team and not just a sub. A sub usually has to pay a sub fee and can't bowl position rounds.
An extra member can bowl position rounds. If it is one week here or there for a person that is missing, it is the whole point of having extra members. The regular member is responsible for paying the back dues owed unless there is an agreement otherwise.
If there is an agreement otherwise whether it be 2-3 weeks for an entire winter league or a elongated amount of time, then the secretary of the league probably would not like 4 weeks behind on league dues where then the extra member would either pay the league fees every week or if the the person that is normally there would show up only just to pay the fees. A sub gets nothing.
If the extra member is paying any of the weekly fees whether it be once for an entire winter season or 8 weeks is entitled to the percentage of that otherwise that person is getting ripped off.

He should be thanking you, unbelievable some people..

I wonder if this sub was aware of the basic etiquette involved in filling in.. He gets free bowling, but that does not entitle him to prize fund.

Right you are, sir. I guess what caught me off guard at that moment was that it wasn't the young guys that screwed me over...it was the older guys (who I had done more to help win while I was there!).

But...was it really worth making a stink over? In my case, no. But if it was half a season instead of seven weeks? Then yes...we would have a problem...

I think an exception to the general rule would be if the sub bowler bowled over a long period of time and bowled exceptionally well, helping the team to make a significant rise in the standings. I have had a few friends do this for various teams and received a portion (not significant, but reasonable) of the payout. In the end its always easier to come to talk about these things up front.

I subbed for someone for 1/2 of the season this year and I would never even expect to get any money. I looked at it as free bowling. I don't know how anyone would expect to get money. You do it to help someone out not as a job.
