League vs Tournaments
« on: December 10, 2009, 12:30:06 PM »
One of my team averages this year is 1080.  We keep getting our butts kicked.   In another league we are a low average team and keep getting our butts handed to us.

I am contemplating next year to not bowl in leagues and just save my money and do tournaments to bowl with more competitive and most likely good bowlers all the time.

Has anyone else done this.  Why or why not?

2ndly if I do do a league next year, I'm thinking of a fun mixed league.

I look at league as practice and an opportunity to work on things. Im part of teams with ~1100 and ~1080 team averages and we are no where near the top of the leagues despite being at the top in team averages and pins knocked down.

I feel your pain.

I dropped to one league this year.  I put the money I WAS spending on league into a savings account that is stricly used for tournament bowling.

1 league that is more of a fun league than competitive,
I bowl with my cousin, brother, brother in law on my team, and we have fun every week,
then I take the rest of my money I was spending on the other leagues and use it for tournaments, usually about 1 a month sometimes 2 a month it depends on my work schedule,

I find with the 1 league I actually have a lot more fun bowling on a weekly basis and Im able to practice as many times a week as I feel necessary to work on whatever it is I feel I need to work on

Remember if you don't bowl league you don't have a certified average and still will have to find somewhere to get you a card. That is at least for tournaments that are USBC certified and personally I will not run or bowl in anything else. League also keeps the rust off, you can practice til your arm falls off and not see the transitions that you will see in a 5 man team league or especially a traveling league. I know guys that only bowl travel league and that is not a bad idea as long as you practive between sessions so the first game or two you don't kill your team.
