Leagues or practice?
« on: August 16, 2004, 07:00:57 AM »
My goal is to become a 200 Ave. or better bowler to compete in scratch events.

I feel in leagues I'm getting no where. I'd like to skip leagues this year and invest in coaching, get more athleticly fit, and practice on my problem areas.

I hate to desert leagues because the house is losing bowlers all of the time.

Opinions respected, might not take all advice. Oposing thoughts apreciated!

Why not do both?  While I highly recommend and often bowl practice, I think leagues are good at creating situations that you cannot simulate while practicing.  Leagues bring in peer pressure, spotlight pressure on a big game or close matches, and also transition/breakdown.  Its hard to simulate any of those on a league, and even if you do, simulation is nothing like the real thing.

Even if you don't get in a super competitive high average league, I would get in a good mixed league or something just to practice tampering with those conditions.  Thats just me though

Bowl in at least one league.  Without an official average, you'll have to bowl scratch in any handicap tournaments.  --  JohnP

Thanks ALL!

I think, I'll put my name around as a sub, or try to join later when someone quits. Most were right about needing competition pressure, that is a very excellent point. Most pressure comes from myself.

21 games would get me an ave. for handicap events.

I can't afford to do it all at once. I realized several new flaws this summer in my game. I really would like to work on them, and maybe go to one coaching event.

I do need to read up and study oil patterns, and learn to shot outside my comfort zone to get better.

Actually the point of staying in league for the competivness was the best advice most of you gave. Thanks.
