Leauge Bowling
« on: December 09, 2004, 07:19:15 AM »
So what do you guys do at leauge, not your weekely leauge that you have been doing for several years.  But say a leauge that you are starting on for the first time in a new house.

I have just joined my first sanctioned leauge, and quite frankly....i suck.  I started in at a 160, and have fell consistantly as the weeks have went on, most of it is linked to bad spare shooting or just poor shooting in general. I shot a 73 in leauge play for crying out loud!!!!!!

I dont know what it is, the leauge is fun, my teamates are great alwalys supportive but when i bowl my timing is always off, i cant be consistant, and its just horrible. I cant carry strikes, i cant find the pocket, i cant find a line that works for me... i just cant get comfortable.

After leauge i will stick around and shoot for fun, and i will bowl consistant 180-200 games like its nothing, shoot spares, buckets anything on the lane.

I read the lanes well, i see what adjustments i should make, see mistakes others are making, but i cant do any of it.

Hey Moe, you I do the same way too. I'm in the 180's average but sometimes when I bowl in the league I fall apart as if I can't find my line either. spares I miss easy ones. The thing is I try so hard every week.  The weird part now is that for the first time I'm the achorman on the team.  I want to perform my best but I seem to fail.  This is just the beginning of this year.  The past few weeks well before Thanksgiving I notice the more i relax the more I'm able to throw the ball alot better and finding my line. I finally shot my first 600 this season. I shot 180+, 200+, amd 220+. So I felt just being relax is the key for me.  I think everyone here would agree with me and you should try that.  When you said after league you were able to score high its because you weren't thinking so much.  That's the only think I can suggest to you is to relax.  I haven't bowled this past 2 weeks due to an injury but when I do go back to bowl being relax is the most important for me to do well during league.

I do relax, im teh most relaxed guy in teh whole damn place.  I dont let it bother me, its not like me bowling puts food on the table or pays bills.  Im always having fun, i would just like to not bowl like crap.

Its not like there is any pressure on me either, i jsut flat out suck when im bowling in leauge.

I joined a 2 man mini leauge just for fun, on that leauge (much smaller, unsanctioned) I bowled 124 (searching for a line) 193 and 184 (found it and left 2 splits) i dunno what it is.

Some advice: show up an hour early, grab a pair next to the ones you're bowling on during league play and get in two games of practice. If the lanes aren't oiled just grab a bite to eat and take your time.
I do this every Sunday morning; might piss off a few people for practicing on their pair but they just kid around. Maybe 3 or 4 people have threatened to bring up at meetings banning early practice but it'll be shot down. I hate crybabies.

Theres early practice, but they oil before our leauge.  Because we bowl after a kid's leauge so the reoil/strip the lanes.

I can bowl but not on the set that they just oiled for the mens leauge, i can bowl on the womens side, shorter pattern.

The lanes are weird, i can find a shot in practice all day but everyone plays the same area so the shot is only there for 5 or so frames for me before i leave an ugly split, the lane conditions in this house change pretty rapidly.

Everyone plays at or between 10-15 board.  I think there able to do this because the have the power of 1. 1 line, 1 house, 1 shot, 1 leauge, for ohhhh say 4 or so years, and they just change balls if anything.

With that being the case, i find that i can play the midlane with great sucess and lots of carry.  So i stand at about 35-40 and send it up 18 or so and that shot is there all night.  But i cant hit it during leauge, to much thinking i suppose.

There are several differences between open bowling and league bowling.

One is the pace of play. In open bowling you generally bowl much faster and can get into a rhythm in league bowling you often may sit for 5 minutes between shots.

Two is that others are playing on the lanes. They are bowling different lines with different styles. The lane pattern will break down differently and more quickly than in open bowling. In the case you just described they may be carrying down oil to your breakpoint and/or creating an over/under reaction.

And finally whether you think you feel it or not there is more pressure to perform as the scores are being recorded and count in matches.

Yea i understand that as one of my problems... i excell at speed bowling. Hence my scores on the 2 man mini leauge.

But how would i go about remedying that...

I have been in more pressure situations in my life than bowling and throwing a ball. Im not even concerned with that, cuz as i said its fun... my teamates have a good time and we all support eachother, and its not like were in it for money so there is no pressure there.

Yes, i beleive thats the case, thats why i step out and play the inside area of the track.  Most if not all guys there play the outside areas of the track.  So i take that factor out, but my timing is just horrible on leauge, i tug shots all day and im the most inconsistant guy all night.

I have just about given up and decided that more leauge experience is the only solution.

Again same story different week... 2 man mini leauge i averaged almost 170.  Second game being the lowest game. Hit alot of my spares, wiffed on a few due to complete mental error.

Im almost sure its the smaller setting of the mini-leauge that allows me to bowl better.  And not worrying about stupid 2 lane courtesy, and other drunken biligerent bowlers... ohh well go figure.
