Left Handed Bowler Choosing a New Ball
« on: January 31, 2004, 01:10:25 AM »
Hi.  I am currently bowling in a high school bowling team, and my ball is becoming "unuseful" for me, and so I was told that if I were to post this question, I might have help.  I was wondering what kind of new ball I should get.  I bowl with a smooth approach, and I lay the ball down on the ground almost.  I put some curve into my ball, but not as much that could hit a seven pin while starting on the left side of the approach.  I was looking to see if anyone could help me in deciding which ball to buy to get me a little more hook.  I currently bowl with a 12 or 13 pound ball.  Please respond if you could help me.  Thank you.

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that I am a stroker, and I am looking for a ball that will give me a little more hook than 12 board on the lane and ... well, the board to the left or right of the forward middle dot on the approach... sorry, I am just so bad with my statistics.  If you're a lefty, please let me know if you're a stroker as well, and what ball you use.  Thanks.

any ball with a reactive cover and
a decent core, with holes in it somewhere
will be good for you. heck your a lefty, and
it does not matter what you throw.

If us righties had as good a shot as the lefties
there would be someone righthanded averaging
about 292.

MMMMMM, anyone else wanna rag on the new lefty...

Seriously, depending on your lane condition any ball
with specs to fit that lane condition should work. If you have a
prefered company, go ahead and start a riot and post your
preferences here and then you will see the replies start
flying in. I prefer Lane #1 to any other equipment out there.
It works for me and it may or may not work for you. Good
Medium balls in the Lane #1 line are just about any of them except the
Super Bomb, Black Cherry, and the XXXL.  The Emerald is
for the lighter side of the oil and the Golden Nugget is for the Heavier Mediums unless you have no hand at all, from what I have been told.

Christian -- From what you've told us, and without seeing you throw a ball, I would recommend an Ebonite Tornado TPS, for less than $100.  --  JohnP

If your release is as smooth as you say it is, and wihtout your release speed, and if you can go up to a 14 lb. ball. My suggestion would be original inferno by Brunswick. It is a great ball, smooth roll, goes long, and has one he11 of a hook at the back end.

Oh and just to pizz a couple of people off that hate this expression.

The ball hits like a mack truck!!!

You'll get to the lefty bashing. Those dam righties get so jealous they can't help but attack us.

As a lefty myself, I'd say a Storm Big Hit Pearl. The ball will give good length with most of the flip coming on the backends. After you graduate from that we'll get you suited for a buzzsaw. If you don't have much speed, go with a length drilling, if you do, I'd try a label drill with pin above and left of your ring finger.

I love the way you slid the lane 1 plug in there. lol. But to get him ready for lane 1, why wouldn't you tell him to get something by Brunswick, that way he can get used to the coverstock? Since that's what lane 1 uses.

Christian,
   I recommend looking into a columbia beast pearl with mica, It is a reasonably priced ball and can still be gotten by your local pro-shop. As far as drill, ask your pro-shop what drill they would recommend after watching you roll and after checking the track area on your old ball.

Thanks guys for your responses: Here's some additional info: My coach told me to go on here to get people's opinions besides his;
I bowl a 160 average, sometimes bowling 170's, and I would like to maybe jump up to around a 180-185 average;
My approach: I start from the forward center dot on the approach, and my ball rolls over 2nd arrow as it "casually" curves into the pocket.  Maybe a ball that woul snap into the pocket would give me more pin-knockdown...
Please keep responding with any ball suggestions, at least 13pounds if it's on ebay or something, no more than 15 though.
