"New" Scorpion Pattern....
« on: September 22, 2008, 12:41:13 PM »
Who has bowled on it?  Other than the extra foot, any other major changes?  When I did live close enough to be in a PBA-X league, it was my favorite pattern.

Since I now live in the middle of **** and shineola, I don't think I'll ever get that chance.  Was just wondering.

All of the PBA patterns have been tweaked for this season.  (Well, they get tweaked every season, but even more so this year).  Most of the patterns are now a foot longer.  Apparently the idea is to get the patterns to play closer to how they're described.

I actually bowled on the new Scorpion last night.  I find the breakpoint to be a bit more outside than it used to play (10/11 previously, last night I was at around 7/8/9).  I had to play a little more direct, and when it carried down it was a pain man.  It kind of reminds me of the Shark pattern, just with a bit more hook lol.  Very fun pattern.

In certain houses, the scorpion pattern can also allow you to get your breakpoint all the way out to the 1-2 board

Move left, hook it more.....

Tommy Jones and Kenny Simard are Gamecock fans...are you???

We shall now refer a 4-bagger as a hambone...Mark it down the revolution has started!

The first time I bowled on the new Scorpion my breakpoint was somewhere near 4-5.  Same house as my review from last night, just different end of it.

I threw on it last month on my local junior tour. It is interesting. I found it easier to play but that seemed to be just me. Scores were way down from other tour stops. I played it up the outside with the Roto Grip Mercury. I really liked the pattern and look forward to playing on it again soon.

Every center has different lane topography, uses different oils, have different oil machines, have tons of different bowler types...  Every person says the PBA patterns can play completely different from house to house, so I can't imagine what useful information you're trying to get, especially since you implied you're not likely to see the pattern anytime soon.

I bowled on the new Scorpion tonight.  My best reaction came from playing a breakpoint at 5.  This was going straight down the boards.  I was unable to let the ball go right of 5 and get it back.  Most of the people in our league were playing outside.  A few played inside, but it appeared they had a very small  area to hit.  I used a pin down Momentum Swing and let the ball roll off my hand.  As usual, if you grabbed the ball or hit up on it, the ball could go most anywhere.  The new Scorpion does not play a lot different.  However we only bowled 3 games.  I believe the transition after several games will be different.

Interesting.  Come to find out, there will be a regional next month on this pattern that I will be attending.  Looking forward to it too.
