lefty/righty drill ?
« on: September 07, 2012, 09:39:15 AM »

sorry for long post!

I am a righty but threw my friends (a lefty) new marauder a few weeks ago and did very well w/it a few 240's chalked it up to it was after league and lanes were a bit burnt.  then last week I subber on his team so i threw his terror in practice a few times and struck, then went to my gear and struggled for 2 games then grabbed his marauder again and shot 220.  his span is shorter than mine & the inserts were flipped & thumb pitch reverse for me.  can't figure out why his equip works so well for me, it wasn't like i was carring weak hits they were all perfect shots, it was like the ball never stopped.  my drill thinks it is the shorter span but i think it is more the thumb pich and how it feels like it is sitting in my hand more (almost like throwing no thumb, but with it in) i get less revs when i take my thumb out...

any help would be great, cause next step is to buy 1 and drill like his....

Shorter span and rev pitches promote less grab and the improved ability to get the thumb out so you werent grabbing the ball as hard and releasing the ball better. Id check his span and pitches compared to yours and  then have my drill performance fit me. Just make sure his span is not too short. Overall it sounds like your span is too long.

my guy has been trying to shorten my span for a long time, i used to be longer/streched but did shrink a bit.
will go get re measured today and see what my buddies span is compared to my new one.
so i guess pin to pap placement & cg placement are really not that important to ball/surface choice.   i throw his dvb better than my own stuff....

think it might be the symetric core as well, always did throw those better.

I'm very interested in your comment to the effect that "my hand felt like the ball laid in it better". This is something that's bothered me for a long while. Interested to hear someone else thinking along the same lines.

@truck- stick your fingers in your ball. Then the thumb and relax the hand. If the finger nails beat the back of the holes, then your span is too long and it needs to be shortened. Be sure that if you shorten the span you check your pitches as they might change.

@lefty- when your shorten the span the ball will lay in the ball better. Stretched or longer spans (no disrespect) are a thing of the past. You wanted to stretch the span to promote grabbing of the ball at the bottom which is what you had to do back in the day. In todays game the balls do an immense amount of work so one doesnt have to grab the ball to get it to hook.

I hear ya, but I went thru the shortening routine long ago due to bad knuckles. Problem now is that the ball seems to lay on the ridge of my hand at the base of the fingers, not in the palm. This is made worse by my left ring finger, which needs a pitch of 7/8 left, which twists the ball even more.

@lefty maybe you need to be fitted off your CLT instead of straight up from the thumb. That would properly fit you and turn the grips and pitches so they fit you better.

I think we're into an offset thumb discussion now, something I've often considered, but I don't want to hijack this thread. I'll start another discussion....

update*  had my driller measure my span and we decied to shorten both fingers a bit, we also changed the pitches of my thumb and moved it over a bit to the left, also used a smaller middle finger insert.  so we used my 2nd nano pearl as a test ball. used it yesterday in league on fresh oil and it worked well but was is my weaker drilled nano so think it would have been better results w/ a stronger ball.  so going to do my taboo next and see if it works.  ball does sit in my palm more & the shorter span doesn't feel to short. did tug a few shots the 1st game that kept me from a better score, shot very good 2nd game but lost carry 3rd game.

picked up a terror & marauder & drilled w/my new span and thumb pitches.
also have some of my other balls being plugged & redrilled

threw my nano pearl head to head w/my buddy's marauder and both rolled the same only the marauder was a few boards stronger, if i played the same line it came up high, had to move a few boards left. i definitely have more tilt now and side roll not coming up the back of the ball.    still confused on why a lefty drilled ball out hooks my Right drilled!!!!!!

Could be, depending on your PAP location, that the "leftie" ball has a more aggressive pin to PAP distance for you than your "rightie" ball.  Especially if your driller doesn't use pin to PAP distance.  --  JohnP

My thoughts exactly, especially with more tilt...  Were layouts based on your pap.....or "we will put the pin over your ring finger" type of layout?

+1 johnnyp.

@truck glad to see its working for you. I would get my driller to check the layout and see what it measures out to with you PAP.

he does and not sure of my exact specs but on the nano it was like 5" and on the dv8 over 6" for me
