I purchased another unit of the same exact ball about a month ago, and at the time the pro-shop had said that the pin was shorter [than the one I had] and if I wanted to wait, they could get me another one of that ball with a longer pin. I didn't wait, and although I have had no problems with the second ball, I've kept wondering what a shorter pin's disadvantage (vs a longer pin) would be.
Or... would it not necessarily be a disadvantage at all and maybe even be a plus, depending on the oil pattern, bowler's speed and style, etc...? In other words... what part of the ball's movement does the length of the Pin affect?
Not looking for anything etched in stone or the ultimate last word on Pin length. Just interested in learning.

I'm assuming you're talking about pin-out, the distance between the pin and the cg. The only different pin-out makes is ability to use some layouts without requiring a balance hole. For example, if you want the pin over the fingers you would want a fairly long pin-out, around 3 1/2 to 4" so the cg would end up near grip center. If you don't mind having a balance hole and drilling finger or thumb holes extra deep, pin-out isn't real important. -- JohnP

Well, I'm probably not using good terminology, but the two marks or dots that [I THINK] reveal where the PIN and CG are, are located ----let's say East to slightly South-East of my Finger and Thumb holes (I am right-handed). On ball #1, distance between them appears to be 3-3 1/2", and on ball #2, it's more like 1 1/2' to 2".
I'm not worried or dis-satisfied with either ball. Just curious especially since they are two otherwise identical units of the same item, what (if any) effect the added length might have on the way they would roll.

Thanks. That is all I was looking for.
Makes me wonder why the Pro Shop person even mentioned it to me in the first place, since he knew I wanted the 2nd ball to be an exact copy of 1st one in terms of drilling, surface, etc.... And I don't think my drilling is unusual.
I mean it's a custom fit, but it's not like I was pushing the envelope to get the ball to do something special.
Maybe he was half saving it for another person and figured he'd see if he could get me to wait a couple days, or maybe he momentarily forgot that there was nothing extraordinary about my drilling.
Anyway---- thank you reassuring me that I didn't pass up a better ball by not waiting. Or at least not in any clear and obvious way that might best be described as having had a "Homer Simpson moment" Doh !!!!
