length of time to lane shine a ball
« on: February 03, 2014, 12:28:39 AM »
Does anybody know approximately how long it will take a ball to pick up lane shine after it was hand sanded to 360 grit? A friend of mine sanded a teammates balls down to this dreadful grit because they are dull OOB, and I assume he was drunk at the time. Tonight during league, my teammate shot one of his best series in a few weeks and attributed it to the sanding, but in reality, it was because he was on his spare game. He tore apart the right side of the lane by the end of game one, and wont listen to anything I say about it. I would really like to know how long I have to play deeper than my comfort zone to stay out of this crap.

Lower grit finishes do change much faster than smoother finishes, but it largely depends on the ball. I have had balls at 500 grit shine up in 3-5 games and others still look dull after 10-15.

You could always sneak a 2k pad into your towel during practice and "accidentally" wipe off his ball by mistake  ;D.

If it's your ball you, then too soon.  If it's somebody else's ball, not soon enough.

The lane is going to take the surface back to at least 1000 pretty quickly.  One reason I never liked throwing super dull stuff.  You cant keep it that way long enough to do any good. Also, the ball is going to pick up a lot more lane oil at such a low grit, as you could see, which further accelerates the change in ball surface reaction.

He is throwing a Hell Raiser Revenge and a Morich Awesome Hook. Redoing the surface is out of the question, even with a pad in the towel. He bowls 3 nights a week, with occasional practice, and throws each ball about the same amount. Should I only have 2-3 weeks of dealing with this?

Like others have said, depends on the ball. I had a Brunswick Fury that seemed to shine up before shadow was over.

I had a V2 Strong/R (I always kept it down to a green scotch-brite because it was cheap) that would shine up after one set. I would make sure my towel was always a little damp with rubbing alcohol when I wiped the ball each frame, but it STILL was up to at least 1000 grit after three games.
