How to Tilt the ball going up the boards.
« on: April 13, 2010, 12:44:07 AM »
I am trying to find ways to fix my tilt. When I try to play up the boards i loose all my ball tilt. What are some drills i can do to keep the tilt but also play up the boards. I have a tendency to push the ball to the right when trying to tilt the ball at release when playing up the boards.

For example when i play 15 to 5 my track is about a inch away from my thumb (I am a high tracker).
When i try to play up the 5 board my track will either click the thumb or be right next to it.

I find i cannot get the ball to react very well when playing up the boards when there is a lot of oil on the lanes, because i cannot get any tilt on the ball.

If anyone can help please let me know, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you're actually talking about axis tilt, please realize that when you played inside, there is a human tendency to cock your wrist to try to get more on the ball to insure it makes the turn. And cocking your wrist adds tilt to your delivery. Your balls are probably drilled for that tilt. When you try to play up the boards, your subconscious does not add that wrist cock and thus less axis tilt. I'd bet if you checked you track when playing outside, it will be a little higher than your normal track.

You could have some tape you to see if this is what is happening. It happens to me, that is why I am suggesting it for a possible reason.

Try using a stronger ball when playing outside, one with more backend that you suspect is really needed. Tilt adds backend because it delays the hook/roll cycle.

I''ve recently come into a lot of tilt. Happened when I got my span shortened and readjusted. I went from tracking high to a PAP about 3.75" over and 1" up. Needless to say, I gained a lot of tilt. The best way to explain how to get tilt from my perspective, is to get your fingers up around 8-9 o''clock at the release. Thumb is usually pointing to the right (for righties) for high trackers. From the feel of it, I think my thumb is almost pointing down at release, pushing the fingers way past the 5-6 o''clock which is standard. I still have a lot of hand, but with a lot of tilt and moderate rotation. I went from having to circle the lane, to playing up ten with these release. Ball is more or less spinning down the lane like a top sort of, but without having the fingers doing the spinning in a tradition "spinner release", if you know what I mean. Pretty drastic. Nice when you have to do it, but I can''t for the life of me get back to my high track release.

To be blunt, it sounds like the driller changed things for the worse. Have you asked him to restore your old span and pitch specs?
If he is resistant, does he know what the sides effects have been?
It doesn't sound positive to me. Maybe you and he are not communicating properly or, maybe, he needs to give you some detailed coaching to help you to adjust to this new span and pitch set-up.

Maybe you had too much of a high track before, but it seems as if you have too low a track now. it's not terrible, your new low track, but it can be problematic with a lot of tilt. I mean you dont really want to track just next to the thumb hoe and the middle finger, but you don't want so much tilt that you can't handle oil at all. A happy medium is easier to deal with.

Maybe some professional driller will chime here.  Maybe I have the picture wrong here.

I just had problems with my thumb getting wrecked after 5+games. They shortened it and added a tick right in the thumb. Equipment has never felt better, which I'm happy about. Although I track pretty low now. I can still circle lanes, that's never an impossibility for me. It's just that I've been forced right with my standard release now. Not really a bad thing as most harder shots don't encourage a gutter to gutter type shot anyway.

your  next  time  on  the  lanes  (practice)  or  what  ever  try  to  keep  your  hand  under by  way  of  you  palm  being  up  at  release...   like  throwing a  straight  ball.

have  your  hand  totally  under  the  ball  kind  off  like  chris  barnes  hand  (with  or  without )  cupped  wrist...

with  that  the  only  way  to  spin  the  ball  would  be  to  death  grip  it  and  rotate  early and  over  the  top.

try  to  lay  the  ball  down  smooth  no  thump  (dump/drop/ double  dribble)...  should  be  nice  and  semi  quiet  careful of  slide  ankle,  could  be  close ( my  ankle  and  bowling  balls  are  very  close  friends..LOL)...

hope  this  will  help  you
