Let's hear your botched 800 stories....

Just as the previous thread about not shooting 300...here is the botched 800 stories.
 
Here are mine:
 
277 - 276 - 191 = 744
 
279 - 280 - 201 = 760
 
289 - 212 - 290 = 791
 
....still without an 800.

Ive had 2 800s,,,,,,,, all the rest (2,000 ish) over the last 15 years are botched 800s...

I eventually achieved the elusive 800, but after that 799, I thought it would never happen.

i just got my defiant drilled monday. and ive already posted 2 750+ series with it. last night i should of had an 800 but i messed my first game up with a 7-10 in the tenth finishing 232, the i went 278, and 289.

Had 158-300-278 before with 4 opens the first game. Had 279, 258, 262 for 799 as well.....left a pocket 7 on the last ball my 3rd game, didn't even realize I was shooting for an 800 until my teammate said " Wow, you just got 799." and my first response without thinking in a crowded bowling alley was "Are you F*$&Ing kidding me!!!?!"

 

Had a couple sets that were 250+. 270+, then a dud in one of the games whether it be first, second, or third...I'm not picky about when to screw it up. I was fortunate to actually bowl my first 800 series before I ever bowled a 300, so getting the 300 monkey off my back was my biggest bugaboo. First time I had front 11 I tugged it and left 8 count. 2nd time I had front 11 I tugged the 11th so made a slight adjustment in the 12th....by slight I mean threw it in the channel for a 290 the hard way. Finally got it on the 3rd try though.

 Even with 16 800s, i have botched a few that were quite depressing lol..

 

279-279-214 for 772

 

278-300-174 for 762 (this one hurt lol)

 

278-290-225 for 793

277, 300, 211 = 788.  And about 6 790+ scores that weren't nearly as awesome a choke job as that 788.  Still without an 800.  But I do have 772 and 752 at the National Tournament the last two years, which I'm using to deflect criticism that I can't get that elusive 800. I had 4 - 299's last year.  Only 3 - 300's to my name.  I try my best to keep honor scores in perspective.

Personally I don't remember specifics. I'm sure I've had 540 to 550 after 2 and not got there. But 250+ games don't grow on trees and all it takes is a couple taps in the wrong spot.

 

The two most extreme examples I've seen.

 

One a guy went 290-290 started the 3rd game with spare-strike-strike and shot 216 the last game.

 

I saw Sean Rash once start 300-300 and shoot 190 something the last game. The lanes really transitioned, 2nd shift 5 person classic league, and it just got ahead of him.

If you bowl in Wichita you can see stuff like what happened to Sean almost every week during the Thunderbird Scratch Classic on monday nights, lots of 220-240avg guys that shoot 550+ out of the gate, then shut it down the third game. Tough rolling 4 games on a 2nd shift league, especially if the early league had a lot of reactive balls being thrown.

A couple of weeks ago I had 246-289 going into game 3.  I had the front 6 in game 3 and thought I was on my way to 800 when I left a 6-7-10 split.  I had to cover the 6-10 and strike out for an even 800...I missed.  Shot 775.

Before I bowled an 800 series, I had one very close series that stands out above all.
 
267-274-258=799
 
2nd game, 12th frame rolled a 6-count! A freakin' 6-count!
3rd game, needed a strike in 10th, INSTEAD went 10-pin, spare, strike which left me....we'll that's why were here.
 
Others:
286-279-230=795
300-267-204=771

I have had 3-800s.  Never tried to bowl any of them.  Just got a good start on my first game, then tried to bowl a 300 every game.  The 800's just happened.  I didn't know it was an award score until they gave me the ring.  I just can't see that a 780+ is a botched score.  Had a 795 last summer.  Just my 2 cents worth.
