Hall of Fame Qualifications

Our local association has a bowling Hall of Fame. Some very accomplished bowlers are in the Hall.

It is for the Wichita Ks area so there are a lot of good bowlers to choose from.

What should be the criteria for being elected into the Hall?

Should some sort of points system be devised?

Points for career average?
Honor scores?
Local tournament wins?
State?
National?
PBA?

And a follow up question, if I may:
On this point system, would Robert Mushtare meet HOF qualifications under the "Meritorious Pre-Bowling" award category?

Wouldn't Mushtare be a candidate for anything from local to world hall of fame? Nobody will probably ever match what he did in such a short time.

Dear BornOnTheMatterhorn:

Robert Mushtare would be an obvious "lock" for a Meritorious Pre-Bowling category, but why shouldn't he be considered for the USBC Hall of Fame -- at least until somebody else it able to match his two certified 900 series?

Also, welcome to these forums. I used to enjoy your posts on the PBA forum, and in actuality, there have been quite a few screen names barred over there.

Sir_rev-a-lot that is something like I was thinking of.

We currently have about 5000 in the association (down from 20,000 30 years ago).

In the past members of the hall of fame submitted names to be considered and voted on entry. Generally a bowler or two a year got in. But some years no one got admitted.

A few years back the association board decided to take the process over, I guess they thought it was to exclusive. They are allowing for anyone to submit a name to be voted on. I'm not sure who is currently doing the voting. The last few years they have been admitting 3 or 4 a year.

You need more criteria than just average and scores as some bowlers seek out the easiest bowling centers to bowl in and don't bowl in competitive scratch leagues or in tournaments.

It is one of those things that you can generally feel that a bowler should be in. They have the respect of their peers but sometimes they can be near the edge of qualifying and it would be nice to have some quantitative way to select bowlers in the performance category.

Elections for meritorious service can sometimes be controversial but performance should feel right.

This year some bowlers got in where I know of other bowlers not in the hall who have much higher qualifications on performance but didn't get nominated.

It is starting to feel like who you know club to get in.

Dear Pinbuster:

That's obviously a good idea (for the association board to have an imput). However, with regard to my area's Hall of Fame, it is nothing but a Hall of Friends private club with NO TIES WHATSOEVER to USBC or the local association.

Such a situation can obviously lead to a situation in which rules and guidelines do not have to be followed in any way, and induction choices are often made on a "good old boys" decision rather than on bowling ability or meritorious service.
