Why the big Arsenal?
« on: December 09, 2005, 02:02:41 AM »
I dont get it exactly. Why does everyone seem to have a 4 or 5+ ball arsenal? I have 3(including spare ball) and i ave about 195 or higher. Obviously it has to do with income? I bowl for my high school team and we bowl 2x a week. plus i bowl a scratch league every saturday.
I just dont get it i guess. . .

Its hard to play with an inferno and not get burned. Last time I threw my inferno, the opposing bowler definitely got burned.

Simple answer to match up better for carry.  Most all can get to the hole but NOT ALL can carry from that angle.  Different equipment layouts, covers, allow better players to match up better to carry better.

Case in point...used three balls in 6 game qualifier across 6 pair.  Each ball allowed me to get to 1-3 but one of them allowed me to carry better than the other two.

If, you have spendable income and bowling is a priority in life....buy equipment and enjoy....if not don't.  Your choice.

I dont understand your question your profile says you have 3 plus a spare ball and are getting a smokin inferno.  that comes to 5 balls in your arsenal....

Well, how many balls you need really depends on the level of bowling that you are doing. To me, if you only bowl recreational leagues (1 or 2 times per week), I would say you need no more than 3 balls, one for medium to heavy oil, one for light to medium oil, and a spare ball.

If you bowl in several different houses and travel to tournaments, however, I can see the justification in carrying a large arsenal. The basic premise is that you never want to walk into a center and meet a condition that you are unprepared to shoot at. Now, we all know that changes in surface of the balls you have, and changes in speed, hand position, etc, should allow you to find a line on any shot. Still, having more options in terms of what you're throwing may give you more room for error and/or maximize your scoring potential. That's what tournaments are usually all about.

Personally, I have an arsenal of eight balls (1 for heavy oil, 1 for medium heavy, 1 solid for medium, 1 pearl for medium, 1 skid-snap ball for medium, 1 for medium-light, 1 for light, and a spare ball) How many of those balls get used on a regular basis? As is often the case, I can use just about any of them to score on league nights. The others are specifically designed to give me more options at tournaments.

I guess I liken this to golfers. There are many good golfers that can use a 7-iron for every shot during a round and damn-near break par. So why do they carry the whole bag? Well, those other clubs match up just a bit better for certain shots, giving them the chance to be more precise and score even better. For a bowler, our 3 and 4 ball rolling bags are our clubs.

I don't find any harm in people carrying large arsenals. To each his own, as I say. The only time I laugh is when a see someone who has an 8-ball arsenal in which every ball is drilled the same, prepped the same and designed to work on the same condition. That just seems foolish, but oh well : )

For league I use 2. Usually a medium and light ball (I can throw it with almost no axis rotation so I don't bring plasticc).  FOr tournaments I bring my 4 ball roller consisting of a heavy, medium, light ball and plastic.  It's basically just for the oil pattern.  I try to give myself the best chance I can get without having to play a weird line.  Sure I could only bring a med-heavy ball and a med-light ball, but I'd rather make the small adjustments than search for a completely new line.  I'll start out with one ball, make some changes with it for a few games then switch to a lower level and start over.  I've used the plastic at the ends of some tournaments when it started getting pretty dry, which is why I bring it.

... because I'm not good enough to use one ball and adjust!  I am a lazy bowler who would rather spend all my spare change buying another ball than to try moving off of 2nd arrow...

Unfortunately, there are houses who do not know how to control their oil machine nor how to use it properly. My house has gotten a new one thi spast SUmmer and they are still playing with it. To exacerbate the situation, the lane surface is extremely old wood. So from October to this week, I have had the need (NOT the want or desire) to use a range of balls and lines played from a mild resin polished pearl, playing inside the 4th arrow, to a dull solid heavy load particle, playing virtually down the 5 board.

I have been burnt by not being prepared with at least 6 balls on a more thanone occasion, when I expected them to have settled their oiling problems. I think they have by now, but I still bring that resin pearl every time, jsut in case.

So it's not just for tournaments where you don't know what to expect.

PPS I don't know where we classify Johnny Petraglia though.  I uderstand he travels with about ...65?  Not a good bowler?

Why do pros have a billion trillion gazillion and three bowling balls?  I highly doubt their skill level is THAT bad (in response to "The better the bowler, the fewer balls he needs").  Even Diandra Asbaty carries what, like 40 balls?

For a league and a house shot that stays the same all the time, the only reason I see for different balls is to play multiple parts of the lane.  Also, sometimes, I just feel like shooting the ball out as far right as I can get it, or blasting the ball straight at the hole!

I also feel warm and tingly when I get a new ball.  I love it!
