I'd consider 6" to be a really weak drilling.

Have to second that thought.  Received this as a suggested drilling for controlling scorched back ends. See example: drill something solid with a 6" pin to pap and keep some surface on it. Best way I have found to control flying backends.

I have two balls drilled like this, and when they hit friction, they're pretty smooth.  Sometimes they get REALLY jumpy though, which scares me.

Thanks for the replies.  I've got several drilled at 5 x 5.  I get crazy backend hook and 3-4 inches of flare @ 5 x 5.  Some one recommeded I go with a weaker drill and someone suggested 6" or 6.5" maybe kicking out the cg would calm the backends down too?  Thinking about doing this with the Brunswick Avalanche Solid.  I've got a Lane Master Hornet now at 5 x 5 but I need more length and a little less backend.  Thoughts?

6" to me is weak in terms of just "potential" strength.

For me 6" is good at getting down the lane, but the effect of my axis rotation is unbelievable, a lot of axis rotation and the ball goes stupidly hard off the dry, little to no axis rotation and its lazy downlane, but it does help the ball save energy very well and for me it tends to provide better hit power than something drilled a little stronger.

If you're looking to calm the backend, try a 5 inch drill, but pin under, or even on the mid-line.  That should help the ball roll sooner.

It depends on how much the balls flares and how much oil you're on.
6" is a weak drill, but 4.5" could also be a weak drilling on a ball whose RG differential (Maximum flare indicator) is only .030"!!

You asked that about an Avalanche Solid. Because its RG diff is so low, 6" is an extremely weak drill pin position. But then so is a 4.5"

On a ball like Wizard or a Copperhead, 6" is a weak drill, but 4.5" is not.

I think so.  I'm going to try a 6" pin under drilling and see if I get the desired reaction I'm after.  Also going to drop down a lb to 15 in hopes of a bit more ball speed.

Consider something closer to pin axis, say 1 - 1 1/2" pin to PAP.  It will roll earlier and arc through the back end.  --  JohnP

with modern bowling balls you could place the pin 6" from your axis and still get plenty of hook------you just wouldn't get any track flare.
