What's your "Dry Lanes" ball?
« on: September 25, 2009, 01:38:11 AM »
I'm trying to find a good dry lanes ball, so I thought I'd see what everyone else uses.  Also, what kind of drilling typically works better, and what's the recommended way to attack dry lanes for a lower speed (around 13.5-14 mph at pins), medium revs bowler?

Hey there, Michelle.  Kind of fun to see what everyone is using, even if it is for their idea of dry lanes.  For me, the house I bowl at puts down a med-light shot on synthetic lanes, and by the third game (5-man teams)of the league I just joined, the heads are pretty much too dry for my slower ball speed.  I was told it is pretty much this way all of the time.  I end up moving waaay left and wheeling the ball, but this is not my comfort zone and it is hit or miss for me.  I want something that will allow me to play more of my normal shot, get thru the heads and mids and yet still have angle and hit for the backend.  Possible?

I do have a retired Phenom Unleased drilled pin under ring, and I was wondering if I took the surface to maybe 4000 Abralon if that might work.  Possibly also add some light polish to it.  What do you think?

I could not tell you anything about a Phenom as I know nothing of the series.  On a med-light environment on synthetics that has been broken down, that is when I would have already been using a Roto Gold Grenade (Pearl Urethane).  Earlier in the night, I would have been using a Faball Blue Nail, polished as much as I could get it.

With your slower speed, you can very likely move waaaaay right with old urethane and walk it (and carry) in if you have any hand at all to go with the slower speed.  There is often still some oil to be had outside of five, and playing a line that has you going about 6-3 with polished urethane, you likely would find something.  And since you describe medium revs, it ought to work...

Thanks for the tip about the far outside and urethane.  Bowled league last night (216, 190, 211), but we had the bye, so the lanes stayed pretty decent without getting too dry for me.  I had polished up the Phenom Unleashed to about 2000 with light polish and it was definitely my weakest ball during practice, so I'll give it a try next week when we are actually bowling against another team.
