High scoring is fun, just don't fool yourself
« on: August 24, 2003, 08:53:39 PM »
Everyone like to bowl good and it exciting to shoot high games and series.  However, we should not fool ourselves into thinking that we are good bowlers when we do this on house shots with todays souped up balls.

As a lefty, when I miss a little right, or hit the ball a little hard, or let up speed,  I might leave a 6 pin but have to really throw one bad to go brooklyn or nose dive.  If I miss out (left), or not hit it, or throw the ball a little harder, the ball may scream back and strike, I may leave a weak 7 or throw one really bad and leave a three pin.  All of these bad mistake can leave me with an easy spare to shoot.  Therefore, if I make my spares, I have a chance to throw enough strike to shoot 210-230.

Now, lets go to the PBA pattern C.  Every mistake you make will be really critical.  Miss right, hit it too hard, or let up speed, you may cross over and not even touch the head pin or you nose dive and leave a Big 4.  Miss left, and you may take out 3 on the left, washout or get enough of the head pin and leave a 3-7-9 (2-8-10 for the righties).  You'll shoot at 6 and 7 pins spares all day long if you miss and you have to be throwing the ball really good to string strikes. It's pretty easy to be in the 170-190 range in a hurry.

I played Tennis years ago and we use wooden rackets that had a sweet spot the size of a quarter.  If you missed the sweet spot, your accuracy and power was way off.  Nowdays, they use these rackets the size of a bread basket and have the sweet spot the size of a basketball, allowing for many miss hits.  If Andy Roddick was to play with one of those old rackets, he's miss hit all day long and wouldn't have close to the power he's used to.

The same way with us, if we play on house shots all the time, we have no idea how bad things could be if they take our shot away.

Enjoy the walls people, don't fool yourself, just have fun and throw your strings.  If you wish to take your game to a different level.  Learn to play the whole lane, every angle, and learn to repeat every shot.

Hose, I couldnt agree with you more. In fact, all summer long I practiced on sport shot patterns to get used to different oil patterns. I also practiced playing different lines and angles to the pocket and learned to watch and read my ball reaction better. The only patter I had real difficulty with was the reverse block. Most other patterns I could find a line to play after a game or two. But a reverse block, forget about it, I was lost!!

I agree with your assessment.

But since virtually everyone now bowls on these easy conditions it blunts the effect of watching the professionals. Just looking at the lanes you can’t tell whether they are tough or easy. The novice watching a PBA telecast says “Hey these pro guys aren’t so good. I saw Billy Joe Jim Bob shoot better than that bowling cosmic the other night. And Billy Joe throws the pins around just like them, coarse he wrestle’s pigs ( as well as LuLu’s sister) so he has lots of power.”.

I know conditions were not the same all over the country but in my hometown (25 years ago) you didn’t see very many 200’s on a given night. When you watched the PBA on Saturday you saw scores shot that you might only see shot 2 or 3 times a year and you marveled at how good these guys where.

We have a good scratch league in town in an easy house. On any given week there will be a couple of honor scores shot if not more. If I want to watch someone shoot 300 why pay to see the pro’s do it when I can watch someone do it for nothing. The key to me is that we have to bring some sanity back to “normal house conditions” so that when we watch the pro’s we can marvel at their abilities. Making the PBA shot easier simply lumps them in with all the rest of us.

Here it is in black and white, from my summer league. Week 5 was on PBA pattern B, while week 6 was on the THS:

#   Wk5   Wk6   +/-
1   417   652   +235
2   474   621   +147
3   531   613   + 82
4   482   602   +120
5   581   602   + 21
6   573   584   + 11
7   481   572   + 91
8   536   552   + 16
9   457   552   + 95
10   513   550   + 37

Bowler #1 averaged 217 on the house shot, while averaging 139 a week earlier on the PBA shot.  While that was extreme, the top 10 scorers in week 6 averaged 28 pins per game higher on the house shot than on the PBA shot.

Of course, the reason we went back to the house shot in week 6 was because the manager couldn't take all the crying and moaning about how terrible the shot was.  It was "the shot" that was terrible, not them, of course.

Yup, you got it right Hose, just enjoy throwing those strikes.

Yeppers,

I agree too,I dunno why,but there are somedays when any condition can kick your ask(aka boootwa!!).

Whether you brought a Original Carbide Bomb or a Dark Green Quantum.

You bring the wrong stuff and dont adjust you get burned!I've been there, done
that!

Ooops,thats kinda another topic,I think?

HHHHHTTIVIIABGBBCADFY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I'm trying to decode this topic as bowling good is cool, bowling
bad is not cool,right?

I dunno,what the hail I'm typing!

I personally dont care if I bowl crappy or not!

I get at least 1 or 2 crappy games a day or night, its no big deal!
Hey!I bowled a 97 last month, why?Becuase I use the wrong balls for that
particular condition and forgot my spare ball at home.I 100% admit
this,so now I make sure every chance I get I bring at least 5 different balls, just in case.

Thats a FAMOUS reality you all know of!!Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Heck mang!Bowl better next time,as long as you are willing to keep pluggin' away at your favorite pastime,no matter what freakin' condition it is.

Moral ta post;Bowl any score you want, its more fun to see what each game ends
up as!

Here's a fun thought,has anyone ever bowled a 72,126,166 or even a 235?

These are unsual numbered scores to accomplish,LOL!!!

Late peeps!Be cool!

I'm gonna post somewherze elze!

I like most people enjoy scoring high.  But on the other hand I have also had my share of bad games also.  As I read the post by psychoballtester, he mentioned some unusual scores, ie. 72 126 166 235.  We'll, I shot one of those unusual scores last year-235 which that night also included my first 600 series of my young league career (235-248-147=630).  I just thought I would let you know.

Proof is in the lane man.  I haven't touched a ball since Saturday and bowled league tonight.  The typical house shot where I can miss and still hit the pocket.  I had only one ball out of the pocket and the rest where 6 pins on high hits, rap 7's and a couple of 10 pins.  I didn't throw the ball any better tonight but scored pretty good.  If I had been on a tough shot, I may have averaged 190 instead of 235.  What do you say when someone says "Nice shooting" when you know that it was the lanes and not yourself?  I just say "Thank you, I got lucky tonight"

Bowling and Tennis are not the only sports which have changed due to advancements in equipment. Let us not forget Sawbones beloved golf These advancements in equipment have given the poorer to average players a greater advantage than to the better skilled players, at least in my humble opinion.

It is amazing how many of our area's "better" bowlers do not, or will compete in the area's "shootouts" where "sport patterns" and PBA patterns are used. There is no way I can hope to consistently win these events against the likes we have entered (many PBA, PWBA, and past PBA & PWBA members amongst some well known amateurs), but I enter all the same. It allows me to see where I truly stand as a bowler, and then work on weaknesses to improve. And if I do well and cash, then I feel like I have accomplished something positive in my efforts.

Hose, I couldn't agree more, I got to bowl on pattern C a few weeks ago in a PBA senior tour stop over/under sweeper tournament. The ball would go dead straight for about 40 ft and snap hook like someone kicked it. I tried everything I could think of, but I just couldn't make anything work and finally just decided to make my spares and let the chips fall where they may, my partner and I finished 20 pins out of the money. I had a great time regardless, I just wish they had a league like that in my area, so I could learn how to adjust and play on tougher conditions.

Danny Wiseman and Ernie Schlegle won the tournament, Danny shot 800+ including a 300 for his last 3 games, this after not touching the ball all summer. That just goes to show how talented these guys are. If I miss practicing I usually don't shoot 600 on an easy house shot, much less a few months on pattern C.

I am with Hose on that C pattern, especially where we were at. Something about that pattern on the ProAnvilanes seems to make it even tougher. The right side was just as ugly as the left. I bowled the worst tournament that I can remember. The only one close was in the same center on the house shot, but that was due to bad maintenance on the approaches. I did not have more than a 2 or 3 board area at the breakpoint and it might not have been that much. Del Ballard was plus 51 for 9 games and I think happy he got that. I saw tour players go minus. What it made me realize is I must be more consistent with all aspects of my game if I want to play with the big boys, that is speed, timing, accuracy, and every other part of the game. It is going to make me proactice more and since I do have the luxury of putting out special patterns, I will be proacticing a lot on the dreaded "C".

I bowl in four different houses for league. In my normal house i am third high average in the house with a 189 last year, while in the another i was high average for the league with 184  then i went to a third house  that puts down a pretty much a christmas tree with ob at 5 and averaging 208  and a league at my college where it was a sanctioned league that had a sport shot but didn't sanction it as sport and they used a different TEST oil everyweek with a different pattern and no one averaged 200 or better and there has never been a honor score shot in the league that is some difficult shots
