There are so many different brands out there today, and many choices within each brand, that it is hard to know if you'll even find a matchup within the brands being pushed on you. Just because it is an Ebonite product doesn't mean it will matchup because the last one did.
There are FAR too many choices these days, and FAR too many balls being thrown into the market, with little or no regard for the effect it is having on bowlers or the sport.
When it gets to the point that you need three different balls just to shoot league at your own house (and in many places you do), things have already gotten way too far out of whack.
To make a long story shorter, if you want to try a different brand, then try one, because there is no more guarantee you'll matchup with anything else out there either.
Just look at the stuff you DO matchup well with, and you will beging to see that many of them have some type of similar traits. The ones that match me best are:
1. Symmetrical weight blocks
2. Lower RG ratings
3. Medium to lower differential ratings
4. Smooth to polished surfaces
Using this information, I can make an educated guess about what types of balls in other lines would tend to matchup with me best.
Now, as for your shop not wanting to drill equipment purchased elsewhere? I really have no answer for that, unless you get your own drill and learn to do it yourself.
