local proshops???????
« on: February 25, 2012, 09:37:58 PM »
its really hard to spend my money on small brands not knowing how they are going to match up to my game or not...local proshops dont carry 900 global or radical,or sesmic,or motiv,lane1 or morich....the  proshops i use carry brunswick,dv8,ebonite 4 brands...they use to carry storm but no longer do....so how is this fair to me and everybody else....especally when i go for a ball and ebonite 4 is being pushed on me....not pushing their brunswick products.....Also is it fair for my proshop guy to get mad at me wanna i want to order online...for these small brands...faster to order from home then to go and see him about ordering it...and waiting?

At the end of the day, its the proshop's responsibility to make sure the customers are happy.  If they are insistent on pushing "their" brand on a customer, then they may end up with fewer customers.

With that being said, its nearly impossible to stock and be up to date on every brand/release from all companies.  The shops typically choose a couple lines/brands and specialize in them.

If you are interested in other brands such as those mentioned... Seismic, 900, AMF, MoRich, Lane#1, etc. then resources such as ballreviews are great.  They attempt to give feedback from others on their experiences.  Many times, video's are posted and other information.

If your local shop doesn't want to provide service (drill equipment not purchased), there are other options...  other local shops, BR members (BuddiesProShop, Tekneek, Mike Austin, etc who will provide the service online), or local individuals with knowledge, equipment, and ability.

Good luck!

Scott

Sounds  like it could be a couple of things.  I generally carry in stock things that I know will move.  If a ball sits on the shelf longer than 30 days it cost the pro shop money.  I never push one brand over the other.  People match up to different companies and different lines.  Some companies are harder to deal with and get balls from.  My distributors do not carry Lane 1 and some do not carry Morich.  I still buy them at BowlExpo if I get a good deal on them by buying direct.  I will buy a few balls from smaller companies to give them a try but normally stick to what I know will sell until they become popular.

There are so many different brands out there today, and many choices within each brand, that it is hard to know if you'll even find a matchup within the brands being pushed on you. Just because it is an Ebonite product doesn't mean it will matchup because the last one did.

There are FAR too many choices these days, and FAR too many balls being thrown into the market, with little or no regard for the effect it is having on bowlers or the sport.

When it gets to the point that you need three different balls just to shoot league at your own house (and in many places you do), things have already gotten way too far out of whack.

To make a long story shorter, if you want to try a different brand, then try one, because there is no more guarantee you'll matchup with anything else out there either.

Just look at the stuff you DO matchup well with, and you will beging to see that many of them have some type of similar traits. The ones that match me best are:

 1. Symmetrical weight blocks

 2. Lower RG ratings

 3. Medium to lower differential ratings

 4. Smooth to polished surfaces

Using this information, I can make an educated guess about what types of balls in other lines would tend to matchup with me best.

Now, as for your shop not wanting to drill equipment purchased elsewhere? I really have no answer for that, unless you get your own drill and learn to do it yourself.

Is he not willing to order you stuff?  My proshop pretty much carries Ebonite brands, a little brunswick and a little storm/roto.  I prefer Storm, so I just have to call him a day or so ahead of time and he gets me whatever I want.

I can only speak to my experience in my small shop, but I can't carry everything.  I carry what I am confident that will roll good for my customers when I drill it to do that certain thing.  I carry mostly Storm and Roto Grip, because they give me what I feel is the most complete line and best shapes in the game right now.

As far as small brands, I can give you my story and hopefully it shows where some concerns might be.  I called Motiv when I opened and inquired about carrying their products, and that I wanted to try one.  Now I don't ask for free balls, if a rep wants me to have one they will offer.  I was asking what they could do for me, which was not much, so I just went ahead and bought a Cruel.  I drilled it with my favorite layout, and the ball rolled like the MB was HORRIBLY mismarked.  I have never seen a ball roll that horrible off of the spot....it almost was like the core was trying to go the other direction after it hit friction.  I went around and around with them about the layout, explained that I'm not an idiot, and finally plugged it and redrilled it the way they told me to.

I went out and it was more of the same....it looked like garbage at the breakpoint.  Noone would give me an explanation, and I couldn't bring myself to plug it and sell it to anyone....so I threw it in the dumpster....with about 5 games on it.  I wasted $130 of MY money on it....

Now tell me why I would take a chance at putting a rock like that in a customer's hand.  My reputation is in every ball that I drill....so if a company makes a turd like that particular ball, guess who looks bad?
