Drop in Weight
« on: May 29, 2006, 12:59:33 AM »
Just wondering if i dropped to a 14lb from 15lb would my scores suffer badly. I play in lots of tournaments that require me to play up to 20 games in a day.I'm nearly 62 and just feeling the pinch, currently averaging well over 200 in all leagues and comps. Would this be a bad move or should i try it. Thanks guys

Over the course of two years i experimented with weights all the way from 16 down to 13.I did not notice a significant drop in carry until I threw the 13's.I carried a 219 average for a full season with 14lb equipment before going back to 15's.The 14's will penalize you on the light hits slightly.

Not having seen you bowl, it is hard to say, but I had almost the same experience as pooh.

I dropped down to 14's for a year due to my wrist hurting. I didn't notice any difference in my average, even though it seemed the very light hits didn't carry quite as good.  At the end of the year, my average was within 1 pin of the previous year ( was actually 1 pin HIGHER ).

When my wrist got better, I went back to 15's, but didn't have to. Just felt more comfortable with that weight, but 14's didn't hurt me a bit in the long run.

i averaged around 200 when i first started using 15 lb and got up to 210 2 year later and about a year ago i dropped down to 14 because of wrist and back problems and raised my average to 220 and i am not as tired, it is more about what feels good pin carry doesn;t suffer very much if at all

I've been using 14's for three years now and I haven't noticed any difference in carry between 14's and 15's at all. My average has gone up 20 pins since I made the change. I find I have a bit more velocity on my deliveries with a 14. I wouldn't worry about it one bit. In fact, more and more people are going to 14lb anyway.

Thanks for your replies most of you have found not a lot of difference. The thought that i can rev the ball a little more and maybe get more pin action may make up for the lighter pocket hits that dont carry and of course wont be feeling tired towards the end of a comp.
