LOCKING A TOPIC!
« on: August 11, 2003, 08:21:34 AM »
Although I have seen the SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR lock a posting, I never knew that the AUTHOR of a topic could LOCK it!

I can't for the life of me figure WHY someone would do this? You would think that when you open a TOPIC you would be looking for as many to be involved as possible .. the more the merrier! I almost see this as a POWER CONTROL tactic! You're not saying what I want to hear so I'm closing MY TOPIC down!

Is there some other explanation?

Joe, if you post a topic.....then get the answer to it, but still want people to see it for a while...you could post that you received the answer, then lock the topic...that way people won't think there was something wrong when you just delete a topic.

Just another function......doesn't happen often, but.........

I think more topics should be locked more often, for many totally valid reasons.
- you got the answer you were looking for.
- someone accidentally or purposefully hijacked the topic.
- the topic became a series posts with opinion replacing fact and egos and emotions replacing user experience and common sense. We have all seen this one happen far too often. Macho BS postings help no one.

If anyone wants to continue a topic that someone else has locked, there's nothing stopping them. If a sub-topic has become important to you, then renew it under a more appropriate subject. The locked topic is there and will not be removed, as far as I know.

Oh yeah, you want me to come over there and kick your a--!?

Usually, Joe, the author will make one last post explaining why they locked the topic.  Not always, but usually - and I'd say 9 times out of 10 it was because 2 or 3 people got to bickering and what they were posting was no longer relevant to the topic.

Thanks folks .. with your help it makes a LITTLE more sense .. still think it a little unusual for the people who respond .. sometimes one thought brings on other comments .. I understand the thought of opening a FOLLOW-UP TOPIC but I feel the writer should PRIDE THEMSELVES that they instigate controversy! But that my opinion!

But, Joe, their object when they wrote the post might not have been to instigate controversy. I think that those who do so will more than likely not lock the topic.

Understand your point .. thanks! The first person to write may satisfy the writer (i.e., agree with the comment) should he close the topic down .. again I understand the POINT but it sure doesn't sound like a FORUM!
