Long vs Short oil patterns

How should I approach the lanes on a sport pattern? What is the rule of thumb for the breakpoint when given the length?

Always go straighter to start with.  If the pattern is longer, start with a ball with some surface and play inside second arrow until you burn a track and then migrate in.  On the shorter patterns, I go with the 2 inch pin to PAP ball and move outside with a breakpoint close to the gutter before migrating inside.  On a short pattern (32-35 feet); the last thing you want to do is burn up the oil in the middle of the lane.  Stay outside as long as you can.  On the long patterns (45 feet roughly); pretend the second arrow is the gutter.  Stay inside it simply because there is a decent amount of oil over a longer period of time unless the volume is low and people use a lot of surface.

So; it is the exact opposite what you night think.  Long patterns; stay in.  Short patterns; stay out as long as you can.

I use the 31 rule...length of the pattern subtract 31 and you have a break point to start with. It will not be perfect but it is a good place to start.

I've used this formula as well in a sport league I joined one summer. It's not an exact science, but it'll shorten your "fishing" time. I was able to line myself up faster against other house hackers.

There are other formulas you will find but it involves more math.

Rule of 31 is ok, but not always a good indicator. Some short patterns play in, some long patterns play out. Throw some balls in different zones, gutter, first arrow, the track, 4th arrow etc. I think this works better than the 31 rule. Ive seen many people play where they thought "they should" play and get their cock beat in being stubborn.

Long story short, house topography always win.

Northface is right.  In addition to topography, where other players are playing and what surfaces they are using will also play a part.  Be open minded.

The thing with sport patterns is they vary dramatically based on the previous shot on the lane before oiling.  If you have a center that puts out a THS all the time then on Sunday they decide to run a sport shot tournament or league, then the true nature of the sport shot will not be seen.  It will be more difficult than the THS, but the THS and topography will prevent it from being what the sport shot was suppose to be.

If you are running the sport shot for multiple shifts and days, then each subsequent oiling will get closer to the true sport shot.  This is one of the reasons why people will score better on the National's shot at their home center than they do at Nationals.  Your home center has a shot history in the lane bed that prevents the occasional sport shot from being the true shot.

Also, if I remember correctly, the rule of 31 is a formulation for exit point from the pattern, not break point.  Your break point could be at a different length.  I see a lot of people throw their first shot down the middle, very slow and with a lot of side rotation.  They will notice at what length the ball makes its change in direction and that will tell them the general length of the pattern.  From there, I would suggest finding a line that gives you enough room at the after the pattern to get to the pocket and still able to throw the ball as straight as possible.  This is why you play outside for short oil and inside for long oil.

The guys above are right, that's why I said rule 31 isn't an exact science. I've played on cheetah on back to back weekends at two houses in two states....one house I was around the 5th board at the end of the pattern. The other house I was riding the twig..... Moral of the story.. Let your ball be your guide....
