Question about release
« on: February 17, 2007, 12:01:52 PM »
In WRW's teaching videos on Youtube, one of them shows how to hook the ball a lot, medium, and low. I notice that when he gets his hand on the side of the ball and comes around it, the ball still rolls. When I do that, the ball spins. Why is this? Does anyone have a good video of their release?

I don't have a video, but this is what my coach has told me.  It is all about when you turn the ball.  If you turn too early, you get the spinning motion.  It also depends on where your hand is.  The more on top of the ball, the more spin.

I hope this makes sense.

walter ray williams, jr., is the master at using an end over end roll when he wants to play the lanes straighter from the outside line. this type of shot works great when the lanes are fresh with oiled heads and dry backends. when the lanes start to breakdown he'll move left and hook the ball. this requires a different release. he will impart some side turn on the ball at release. this will cause the ball to go to the right and recover on the backend. a ball that has a low grit of sanding may hook too early or hook and quit. it depends upon the lane condition you're bowling on.

He has worked with me on delaying turning the ball until my hand is just past my ankle.  I had a tendency to start turning behind the ankle.

TP, now that I think about it, I think that may be my problem. I've figured that if I start turning too early, it gives me enough time to come around the ball too much. If I start to release at my ankle, I can't really do that unless I jerked up, which I don't do. I'll try that tomorrow, thanks!
