Bowling superstitions
« on: November 01, 2011, 07:14:45 AM »
My son and I were talking about these after I told him to wait for another bowler to finish before he went into the approach. The guy two lanes down had the first 11 and was working in #12 for the perfecto (he got it).

What ones do you have?

I don't have it, but I see bowlers all the time who refuse to throw with a split on the next lane (either side).

That's me.  But I dont think it's as much superstition as much as it is me thinking about it being there and thereby taking focus off my next shot.  Also, by waiting i'm also ensuring I dont rush the next shot....

I just dont feel that the split's existance on the next lane will really affect carry or "luck" etc.....

Thats just me...

One teammate who bowls on one of my tournament teams does it out of pure superstition and readily admits this.  I dont get that....

I think some mistake a pre-shot routine for a superstition.  Sometimes you will see someone blow into their thumb hole, lick their soles, pick up the ball a certain way, etc.  Most of it is OK because it is highly recommended that we use a consistent pre-shot routine.  It helps keep things in sync.  Some might look at certain aspects of some people's pre-shot routine as superstition.

I will agree, the split thing next door is a common one and I don't see that as part of a pre-shot routine. :-)

Im the 5th bowler on my team and I won't go until the 4th bowler on the other team throws his first ball.  I guess its because i dont want to get to far ahead of the other team.

Waiting a pair to the right then to the left of me when bowling in league.  Oh wait, thats what others do in a league I bowl in!   Come on now, we don't bowl in the PBA!  This is league, I hate giving 2 lane courtesy.  1 lane should be suffice!

I have one that I picked up in the last two years....

If my towel drops on the floor, or if I find it on the floor, then I refold my towel.

Lately though, I've been doing this as well...

I have two towels in bag used to wipe the ball during play, one is green and the other one is blue. I use only one of them until I bowl below 600, then I would switch them out. lol So far I haven't switched in out in 15 games...

I like two lane. I've had many a time I was on a good string or having a great night with a possible 800, only to be walked up on by some jacka$$ who has no clue what they were doing. It drives me crazy! Last year, front 10. I'm on the approach, guy picks up his ball. I see it, and put mine down and backed off. He bowls, I pick up my ball and go to set. A step into my approach and the guy lines up and walks. I'm not blaming, but come on. I believe in two lane and give it generously. I can't stand those that need the house to basically stop for them to throw a shot. That gets ridiculous.

Balls in the bag and order they come out:
#1/2 Nano and Anarchy #3- Virtual Energy   #4- Gravity Shift #5- Big Hit (spare and really dry)
#6- Teal Rhino Pro (oldie but a goodie)

I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE LET ME GO BEFORE THEM WHEN I AM HAVE 10-11-12 IN A ROW I HATE IT!! I HATE IT WHEN THEY WAIT FOR ME OR TRY TO WAIT FOR ME!

I used to bowl at a house with hand scoring if someone was stringing strikes you were not allowed to fill in the scores for that bowler until the string was broken. i.e If I have seven in a row and miss on the eigth then they can fill my scores in.

I would think that if you are bowling well, you are focused and shouldn't be worried if there is a bowler 2 lanes over about to bowl.  If you are, then you need to work on your mental game!

 +1

I've recently been bowling in a fun league, and often have people we are bowling against talking to me as they walk back after their shot while I'm setting up. Had one girl took a little long to walk back, and she was talking to me about her shot through my first 3 steps.  In the hole for a strike, and when I got back to the settee area I continued the conversation she started like nothing happened.  Of course, the one shot she did that and I left a 10 pin I told her it was her fault I didn't strike!  lol

In competitive leagues, one lane is plenty.  Better bowlers should be able to time their set up with the approach of others and block out anything outside their immediate area.  I've been distracted by something I've caught out the corner of my eye before, but I didn't get mad at the person moving about if it messed up my shot.  I got mad at myself for letting it become a distraction in my head.

I need one lane either side to bowl. If I'm not looking at the lanes and my line when on the approach because of someone two lanes over then I would have the attention span of a gnat. If someone is on 300 I don't mind giving them as many lanes as others choose to. I can wait.

When I first started bowling I would wait for splits on either side of me. Then after I though about it, at that rate you would be stupid to bowl if people next to you did anything less then strike. So now I just bowl.

I am the lead off bowler on my team.  I will not bowl until my anchor has finished his frame.  Not because of superstition, but becasuse if I do, then he feels rushed, and will sometimes make a bad shot.

If you are not focused on your game, then a split beside you will cause you to get that shot in your mind, and that is usually the shot you will make.
