Does this make sense
« on: February 03, 2004, 10:40:08 AM »
I hat a little chat with the owner at the alley tonite regarding a sport league.  This house is old wood lanes, 24' guardian.  He claims it would be impossible for him to put out a fair shot and still remain in compliance with the rules.

The lanes are so worn he says if he puts out enough oil on the right side to keep the shot playable, he will flood out the leftside.  If he cuts back on the oil on the left to keep it playable, there won't be enough oil on the right side.

What do you experts think.  is he right or wrong.

Having had some (horrendous) experiences with the wear of and use on Guardian overlays, I am inclined to believe him. Lightly oil a Guardian overlay and you'll have the potential for a condition much harder than any Sport condition by the 4th game or 2nd shift of bowling.

It is one of the freakiest and cheapest lane surface fixes ever invented. When the transitions which develop on them were discovered, it should have been removed from use; the ABC should have declared it illegal to use. Corporate cheapness, stupidity and total disregard for bowlers reared its ugly head yet again.

Can you tell I hate it!

I don't particularly care much for it either. Ours takes about 1/2 game before the heads are gone.

I just wasn't sure if he was correct or not or just didn't want to go thru the hassle of sanctioning a sport league.

The key here is to sanction it as a sport league.

Since they are required to have no more than a 2:1 ratio then maybe he couldn’t lighten the load enough on the left side and still be in compliance.

Because of all the additional play the right side will be worn considerable more and may require significantly more oil than the left side to keep the heads playable.

If the surface is shot, it doesn't matter how much oil you put down or in what pattern. I bowled in our State tournament(PA) a couple years ago. The lanes were in really bad shape. In dire need of resurfacing. I watched them oil just before my squad. We hit the lanes and...nothing. You could see the film of the oil, but it had no effect on ball reaction. It was just like bowling on late shift lanes that haven't been touched.
