Looking for a ball with a true hockey stick shape
« on: September 09, 2020, 10:34:04 PM »
Are there any bowling balls today that you guys would recommend which would give me a hockey stick reaction? Even today, I have 2 of the original AMF Nighthawks, an AMF Angle Evolution Extra, a Hammer Jet Black Taboo, a 900 Global Black Eagle, a 900 Global Black Ops in my arsenal which give me this shape but I want to look at something newer. What are your suggestions?

Astro Physix and Phaze III come to mind.

The Nuclear Cell from the videos I have seen have the biggest skid/flip reaction I have seen in a long time followed by the Phaze III.

In this video he does compare the Astro to the Nuclear and he clearly states that the Nuclear is stronger downlane which translates to more angular.  You have about the most popular core Roto ever came out with combined with the cleanest and flippiest (if that is a word) coverstock.

Bowler100,
As someone who owns the Nuclear Cell, Phaze III, and AstroPhysix balls, I can tell you that the Nuclear Cell is more responsive to friction than the others in the Storm and Roto Grip lineup.  Period!

If a hockey stick reaction is what you "really" want, then you have to be prepared for the reaction that you “will be” getting.  The Nuclear Cell is so responsive to friction that it literally can come back from all parts of the lane.  However, because of that same responsiveness, if you miss your spot with the ball, you will be dealing with a split or high hit through the face.  Seriously.

I am not the most accurate bowler in the world, so I like balls that allow for a little bit of miss room left or right.  I see that in my Phaze III and AstroPhysix.  However, with the Nuclear Cell, I have to be damn near perfect because of the responsiveness of the cover.  And, I have to move quicker during a game because of it.   Sometimes, it can be frustrating because I am not used to moving that fast during a game.  And of course, when it is useable, it’s a fantastic ball.

In closing, if you want a ball that will force you to move every 3 or 4 frames, yet looks good on the lanes, then the Nuclear Cell is the bomb.  LOL!   But if you want the same type of look from other Storm or Roto Grip balls, there are other choices that look just as good, but will not cause you to want to grab a “hockey stick” and smash the ball to pieces.  LOL!   8) >:( :o ;D

Regarding the Nuclear Cell, use at your own risk!   It’s a good ball, but it might make your head go BOOM!  ;)  LOL!   Peace!

Totally right on the Nuclear Cell. My excuse is I don't get along with hockey stick shape balls 99% of the time so I tend to ignore them 😅

Never thrown the Nuclear but i don't doubt it. For me, the most responsive ball i've thrown was the Inception Pearl. That thing was stupid angular for me.

Lots of good options out there.  Most strong pearls can give you this look.  The real wuestion is where are you using it.  "Hockey stick" is last thing I want on fresh flat patter or even on many house shots.  However it is great when I need to move in.

At my home center, the house shot is a 43 foot long blended wall with lots of hold (or hang) in the middle. Not too much free hook outside five. Most people with less hand than me are throwing Axioms and UFOs.

I have the Astro Physix and definitely not that type of reaction for me. More of a downlane strong arc. Phaze III perhaps...
I have an old Gravity Shift and that thing looks like someone kicks it straight left when it hits the dry.

Wreck-Em is the most skid snap ball I have ever owned. Ball literally goes sideways at the end of the pattern. Great for when the fronts burn up. Ball never sees friction. Very underrated ball.
