Looking for a new ball..any ideas?
« on: May 15, 2011, 12:43:34 PM »
Looking for a new ball but really only know about storm stuff. I don't know a whole lot about any other products however I know there are some good ones. I throw a Prodigy and a Virtual Energy. The VE I really only throw for ten pins because its pretty much dead. To give you guys a little help, my prodigy is drilled pin up over the bridge. I throw between 15.5-17 mph but I dont know my rev rate. I throw between second and third arrow generally. And I track around an inch from my thumb and finger holes. Whether thats a high or a low track I'm not sure because I dont know where you are supposed to judge it from. I'm really open to any suggestions, a strong, yet controllable ball reaction is preferred. Thanks in advance.

Main house, pretty heavy oil.  Second house a bit less. Stay inside the second arrow at the second house or its not coming back. Main house goes the same way for the first game then it opens up some.

Heavier oil- the VG Nano from Storm is crazy strong.  If you like Roto Grip, the Theory is also another good choice.  One thing I will say is that if the 4000 cover on the VG Nano doesn't work, sand it w/ 2000 Abralon and it can help on the backends.  That is what I learned when I would play anywhere between 2-3 and swing it out to the right or play a little more outside (I throw around 17-21mph) and the 2000AB definitely helped me out.  If you want a little extra length, the Infinite Theory is a good choice.

I have seen some people also throwing the Track 715T and it's a good ball.  It's not as strong as the VG Nano but is very consistant.

As for your Virtual Energy, baking the oil out can bring the ball back to life since you mentioned you can only use it for spares at this point.

Alright, I'll have to think about it. I heard Track's are nice, but after a month or two they suddenly stop working like before. I know a few people just in my house that have had that problem.

As for my VE, I have baked some oil out which woke it back up. Main problem is the thumb is very snug so I have a hard time getting out of it which then causes me to lose reaction because of how much less hand I get in it.

Just a crazy idea, spend a few bucks and have the thumb opened up a bit?

Is there something specific you are looking for with this new ball?  Do you want a benchmark ball or something for heavy or light oil?  Or do you need something for when the lanes go through transition?  Also, are you looking at equipment at the premier performance level, the advanced or mid-level, or at the entry level?  Some of the entry level gear delivers high performance results if your game is solid.

Since you roll Storm gear, you already have plenty of equipment to consider but for me I'd suggest looking at the Rotogrip offerings.  I have just started rolling the Rising Star and the Nomad Dagger and those balls are a great match for my stroker style game.  They also gave me an amazing bang for my bucks.

Btw, I have thrown equipment from a number of the big brands and I believe that every one of these companies have great equipment at all the price points.  You may want to find a local pro shop who are doing the 'try before you buy' service to test drive some of the gear you are considering.  Hope this helps and good luck finding your new wonder ball.

I find that when the lanes dry out, I don't have enough hand (yet, still learning the art of the release) to play a deep line. It will come back when I try to play deep, but it comes back weak. So right now, I pick my speed up to 17 or 18 when that happens. Which I'd rather not do, just because while throwing that hard if I miss it just a little bit at the bottom, I'm screwed and it hits flat. So something that I can play deep with, or maybe if you guys think something weaker would be better so I can stay around the same line the whole night would be better, what you may suggest for that option as well.

I personally find that morich balls in  general hit pretty hard with a lot of carry.  My favorite right now is the RipR. Only seen a few balls with its type of reaction in my house.
