Takling Your Hand Out/Revs Off
« on: October 01, 2004, 04:05:19 AM »
Ok people here's a TGIF topic I'm interested in and we don't have to worry about messages cuz there ain't any.

Anyway over the years I have done this pretty well but working on it more lately with some of the lane patterns I am seeing lately.

How many of you do this?  Take your hand completely out of the ball and take revs off?  In other words, break your hand back like you would say shooting at a single pin spare.

If you are playing the lanes straighter say even on a THS with very dry to right for a right hander with a less hooking ball say a Centaur.  I did this last night just for grins and shot two big games.  This seems to hold ball on line better than anything else for me and if I use the right cover/layout and differential I can stay in the same trajectory on the lanes for shot after shot while if I was playing my normal shot I'd be moving probably 5-8 boards on a typical set.

How many others adjust this way?  Do you fear leaving an 8-10?  Do you use more hooking/stronger equipment while using a weak broken back release?

Like to hear what others are doing or have anything to add?

I take me hand out of the ball but it is more or less having nothing to do with the wrist position.

it is more about not grabbing the ball in the down swing and not snapping the fingers through the shot.

for the most part I don't even consider my hand position or wrist position. at least at the time. the real trick is trying to get a little on the ball when needed and still not grab it.

I know as soon as I let it go. I grab it. 10 pin or eractic move of the dry. If Let it go clean and hit my target I know I have a great chance at a strike.

I try and use as strong a ball as I can get away with. that way I get a good firm read on the lanes. I also like to go as straight as I can. it just seams to work better for me.

I use to have more revs and would swing the lane. I could overpower the lane condition but I was so erratic and the newer resin don't really help, as I would always get over/under. now I belive in straighter is greater.

reverse finger pitch can help!

I'm struggling with this also. I was thinking of trying a reverse pitch in the fingers to help keep from grabbing. Maybe a smoother release???

I have a gone with negative/reverse pitch in the fingers this year along with less reverse in the thumb and lil shorter span.  I don't grab the ball unless it's a timing problem or total screw up on my part.

For those that use a broken hand or say a less aggressive release.  What's your ball speed?  How do your normally track?  Is your carry as good with a "normal" release?  I doubt myself that I could use this type of release and cover many boards for me it's really a down and in or off the corner trajectory.  I tend to use a drag/open hand release when heads are toast and I am in deep.

This is an on going experiment for me.  Consider WRW with lots of forward roll with stronger equipment lots of loft some hit has to play with quite a bit of speed or ball will roll out.

FWIW, I use a clt grip so my hand is relaxed and my finger pitches are away. i/4 and 3/8ths on the ring. I also have either 18 or 1/4 forward in my thumb.

for the most part the ball holds my hand instead of me holding the ball.

as another tool to help me not garb the ball I have gone with sharp bevels. not for the faint of hart. it took me a couple of 1 hour practice sessions to get use to it. now I can't live without them. any kind of bevel makes me want to grab the ball.

Tested a set of balls yesterday with 1/16 reverse thumb and 1/16 forward fingers.

Another set with 3/16 forward thumb and 1/4 reverse fingers and there was a lot less revs off the 1/4 reverse fingers and a more rounded shape.

Answer I think for me is somewhere in the middle.

My span is 4 9/16.
