How do you practice????
« on: March 10, 2010, 03:25:23 PM »
OK, so here is the deal, I have never practiced bowling in my life.  I grew up playing other sports, never bowled junior leagues, nothing like that.  I have bowled in adult leagues since I was about 19 but never bowled before that.  Now I am getting into more competitive leagues and want to put in some practice.

So, back to the original question, how do you go about practicing.  Is it a matter of just going out and bowling several games trying to force the ball into different areas of the lane and still get to the pocket or are there actual things you can do to call it practice other than just go out and bowl a few games a day to see how you can score.

i think that you need to look at your game and see what fundementals you need to work on and go from there..

I tend to identify stuff that needs work and schedule practice around that. It also depends on my tournament schedule, generally I put in more practice leading up to a tournament. These are the kinds of things I'll work on

Spares shooting at single pins
Looking at the effect of various adjustments (loft/hand position) on ball reaction, comparing multiple balls
Drills (foul-line/2-step drill)
Accuracy aiming for a specific target, usually, this will be some area of the lane where I'm less comfortable such as outside 5th board or inside 4th arrow.

If I'm leading up to a big tournament, I often go up and aim to just relax and get the ball off cleanly. I try not to focus on anything too major this close to an event, so maybe just some spare shooting and some repeating of shots, to keep the arm and body loose

What I usually do is bring four balls with, and bowl two games with each ball. After that I turn the monitors off and practice spares. I normally bowl with a friend and we will take turns throwing the others first ball trying to leave difficult spare combos for the other one to pick up. It helps alot because you don't just practice single pins, you practice everything.

Sometimes I bring a few balls and will rotate as soon as I don't strike. It helps get a feeling for making a line change. Spares I will send the ball wide or move right to make it come high. Every once in awhile play a game or two with the spare ball.

You should find a coach who can analyze your game and provide guidance on what you need to practice.  This will make your practice time more effective.

A few things everybody should work on though is spares.  A good way to begin is to throw a game or two of only 10 pins and 7 pins.  Then it is on to your strike ball.  I like to take several balls with me.  I then keep a small notebook in my bowling bag.  I record the oil pattern, the breakpoint, target and foot position.  I use the information to see how each ball reacts compared to the others.  Then when I need to switch balls during a match, I am not guessing what the reaction is.  I already know.  I will use each ball a few frames.  Score is not important.  You are practicing.

I do not like long practice sessions.  I think shorter, but more efficient practice sessions are best.
