« on: May 24, 2011, 11:55:08 PM »
have a question for all current or former college bowlers.  was watching a replay of a college show today and my son asked how the sponsorships work in schools from the ball company's.  any help will be appreciated.

For my school, we were not sponsored by any particular company.  At the time, only Brunswick had a college bowling pricing plan whiched allowed us to get balls like the Zones and Infernos for $75.

The other companies considered us "pro shops" so we got pro shop pricing for stuff.  At times the pricing was even better than pro shops.

For the teams that are sponsored, I can only attest to the way it was 5 years ago for my area.  West Texas had a Columbia sponsorship and I think they got either 2 free balls a year or 2 per semester.  On top of that, they got special pricing for other stuff.

University of Houston had a deal with Dynothane for a while and I am sure it was similar.

Some of the more prominent programs may get more stuff.

I am not a pro-bowler, but I do play one on BallReviews.com

I guess it's considered team equipment?  Other athlete's don't pay for their pads, uniforms, bats, sticks...

I bowled for West Texas A&M University from 2003-2007. During that time we were sponsored by Columbia. We received two free balls per semester and also received two free totes per semester. The reason we are allowed to recieve the free items without being in trouble is: we as the bowlers are indemnified through the university program, and also we are a club sport and not an NCAA sport. Because of this, club teams do not have as strict of stipulations to follow in comparison to an NCAA team. If a bowler is still youth and competes on the college team, they will not be punished for accepting the free equipment, due to the A) university being a club sport, and B) indemnification.

I hope this helps

Its no different then schools football teams being sponsored by nike or Adidas and getting free cleats and school apparel. But the schools get a special pricing guide cheaper then most pro shops or if they are sponsored by a school depending on the level of sponsorship they get even better deals.

The difference is for men's bowling its not governed by NCAA therefore their sanctioning rules do not apply. There is a large rule book that is published yearly but the USBC that has clauses on all sorts of things that needs to be read.

When a college team registers with the USBC they get a "ball packet" that allows the teams to order direct from the companies at a lowered rate in some cases.

The actual sponsering depends entirely by school and ball company, it varies in almost every case.

I bowled for Lindenwood and we were on with Brunswick.

The set up is very similar to the advisory staff contract.

At Lindenwood we got a special price on balls plus a few balls were given to people on the A and B teams.

Players on the A team had to use Brunswick exclusively at tournaments and wear their logo on our shirts.

As college bowlers I think we could have gotten balls from other manufacturers at a discounted price (but not as cheap) but I don't think anybody did that.

Its a real good program that gives kids an opportunity to build a more complete arsenal plus is a fantastic promotional strategy for Brunswick as they got all of the top young people throwing and talking about their equipment.

I know most of the universities around my area are "clubs," as opposed to actual sport teams.  They do travel to other places to compete against other schools however, as stated above, they are not governed by the NCAA only by USBC.  That also might be the reason why they can play in money leagues and not get kicked off the team.

You get points based on tournament finishes.  It is all based on team pinfall.

Top 32 schools go to the championships,. they have a qualifying to determine seeds and then it is a double elimination bracket

it probably works like the football team example from before. the school is sponsored by the companies, not the individual bowler. so getting balls and shoes is like the football team getting cleats, pads and helmets
