tracking over holes
« on: February 13, 2012, 04:51:55 AM »
Hey everyone.  I track over the thumb and finger holes on some of my balls and was wondering if adding a weight hole to these balls would change my tracking area away from the holes or not?
My pap is 6 1/2" and 0 lefty and 500 plus revs 21 mph.  The balls I have trouble with are mainly right handed balls that are drilled near neutral or with pin up drillings above the fingers and the cg within 2" of the span center.  I have a lot of success with using right handed balls, they tend to really snap hard for me and I use them for the fresh tracks and different look on the lanes.  Lefty balls are great for me also but tend to be more control balls no matter the drilling.  I have 300 games with both right and left drilled balls.
If anyone could shine some light on my troubles please give me some info.  And no bs about me just using lefty drilled balls would make my life easier stuff.  thanks ball review members.

A weight hole may help the situation. Do you track over the fingers and thumb for every ball or just "right" or "left" handed? I may suggest you try drilling a ball or two full roller and see what happens.

Just to let you know the only difference from left and right handed bowling balls are the distances from pin to your axis. A "right" handed ball can, depending on how its drilled, have a 6" plus pin to PAP distance.

by righty drilled balls you mean pin and CG to the right of your grip centerline?

With a PAP that far over, you are actually getting pin-pap distances of  greater than 6 3/4 inches I'd say. I've seen a few other people with really far over PAPs (6in+) that have had trouble with clipping the thumb or finger holes if they drilled anything with the pin farther away from their PAP than above their ring finger. I'd suggest, that if clipping the holes is affecting your ball reaction, it negates the effects you like from throwing "righty" balls. So the priority would be to adjust the way you drill balls by moving a combination of the pin or the cg closer to your PAP until clipping is no longer a problem. I have a fairly far over PAP (~5.75in), and I've noticed that I track a little bit differently with symmetric balls compared to asymmetric. The symmetric get a LOT closer to the fingers than the asymmetric, so you might keep that in mind.

Maybe with some old balls that clip, try redrilling with slight variations in the pin and CG placement, moving them closer to the PAP a little bit. You might also see results by just moving the CG but leaving the pin alone, and vise versa.

I do use my thumb.  I have seen a difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical ball on the tracking.  The symmetrical ones r the trouble.  Would the weight hole help on those?

I cant say for sure. I have no experience with it.
I have 2 wild cards (big B symmetrics) one is pin above the ring, CG a little right of center line, and it tracks fairly nicely, but I have one pin below the ring, CG kicked out a bit, and a weight hole near the PAP, and it tracks very close to the fingers. So this leads me to think weight hole may make it worse. But I cant say for sure, this is the only case I have to provide any evidence.

I asked about use of your thumb because I see the combination of high track, very low axis tilt, and high revs primarily with no-thumbers.  You need to work on rotating your hand through the release to reduce your horizontal PAP component and get more axis tilt.  I think your success with "right handed" balls is because you have exceeded 6 3/4" pin to PAP, which inverts the flare rings.  Try cocking (not cupping) your wrist toward your pinkie finger, then as the thumb releases straighten it out, similar to the motion used to crack a whip.  Look on YouTube for Chris Barnes (also Tommy Jones, Wes Malott, and others) slow motion release and you'll see what I'm talking about.  --  JohnP
