Title: Looking For input on wrist devices/Gadgets
Post by: rctc286 on July 18, 2012, 02:34:31 PM
I have Wrist issues (tendonities).  Some weeks are better then others with pain and wrist getting strained/tired.  Looking for some input on what people are using that works or help.  Right now I am using the masters wrist thing just goes around the wrist only, and have tried the storm wrist thing to doest really help that much.

If you want to go the cheap route, a robby wrist brace is great. I use that in practice to keep the feel of not grabbing the ball. The bar inside of it is pliable so you can bend it forward for more cupping of the wrist or backwards to come out of it flat.

The pro release is a great option if you wanted to spend a little more money. My family has been using it successfully since they came out. Other companies make wrist devices but i dont have any experience with them so i cant give you any info on them. Not saying their not good, just saying someone else with more experience with them can give you better insight. But the those would be my two choices.

I've had issues with my wrist this past season, and I started using the pro wrist for the last couple of months. This devise offers a great deal of support, and due to it's design which wraps around and immobilizes the wrist, largely takes the wrist out of the shot.It takes getting used to, but I don't have any of the pain that I suffered through most of last season.

I started wearing a Mongoose Lifter this past season because of an injury and I am very happy with it.

I think it's a happy medium between the low end devices and the robo-cop type devices where your wrist/hand is completely locked into one position.

I use the Storm Gadget.  I take it off for right side spares "most" of the time though... I say most, because I left it on this week for most of the spares & I missed 2.  Chopped off the 6 pin on a 6/10 & missed a ten pin by an eye lash.

I have the same issues with tendonitis in the wrist as well as the sliding knee. Another gift from years of wrestling.  I have tried to stay away from the rigid braces. I do have to go through a ritual of sorts. I massage "bio-freeze into the wrist and fingers. Stretch the wrist forward & back, side to side and then usually put on a neoprene wrister to keep the wrist warm, and throw the practice shots at 50% power and work up slowly.(I believe walmart now carries a product similar to Biofreeze ).

Just out of curiosity, what did the doctor say?

I don't use the Robbies wrist support with the bar in the palm but I do recommend it for some of my female students.  The first thing I do is take the metal bar out of the palm and try it like that first.  If the wrist is still painful, you can easily put the the metal bar back in.

I did use the Pro Release myself but didn't like the way the supprt pulled away from my arm and seen a lot of other users put a velcro strap on the top of the Pro Release to help prevent the problem I was having.

Storm has a couple of good adjustable wrist supports one with the additional finger support and one that ends at the beginning of the fingers.

I really liked the Robbie Revs with finger support because it is adjustable and with ease you can leave the wrist support on while making an adjustment to attemp the 6-10 for RH bowlers 4-7 for LH bowlers.  Its very difficult to do this with the Pro Release.

I have used Robbie's Revs for years and find it has really helped. I have arthritis in my hands
and the brace helps alot, in addition to adding control to my release.

I have no issues with my wrist, and hook the ball a lot with no wrist brace.  Too much.

I use the wrist brace to create a more penetrating flight plan.

An old Columbia 300 brace or Robbie's wrister have accomplished that for me.

What I get out of it also is the ability to adjust at release and increase or decrease hook at the point of release off of the support of the brace.  I find it very neat and helpful.

Luckylefty
PS haven't been using it lately think I will today!

Over the years, I've purchased just about every type of wrist brace produced -- hard, soft, tall, short, strap in the palm, strap across the fingers, adjustable, fixed form, etc. I have a large box to house my collection.  ::)

Unfortunately, the only way to know which type will work for your particular situation is to buy and try. The feel and results for a given brace will be different for everyone.

If your main goal is to relieve tendinitis pain, I'd suggest one of the longer hard braces (Gadget, Revs I, etc.) When I strained some ligaments in my hand a few years ago, the Gadget was the only brace I owned that provided necessary relief. After I healed over a 6 month period, I went to the Revs II, which is less restrictive.

But my first advice would be to stop bowling until you heal. A brace will only mask the problem and may never allow things to completely get well. This isn't what you want to hear, but the best solution for the long run. Good luck.

Like others here, I've tried many different wrist supports over the years and have had success with some and not so much with others.  Presently I'm using the Ebonite support with the long index finger.( don't know what they call it )  It keeps my wrist straight (reducing any pain I might have) and the long index finger gives me more length and backend than I get from other supports.  My suggestion is to see if your pro shop will let you try one to see how it works for you before you buy.  That's what I did.  In fact, I tried one a couple of times  before I bought it.  Just my $.02.

Good luck.

You might ask your pro shop if you can test drive some of the wrist supports he carries in stock.
